You've been doing the dedicated thing since you been here right?? That's why I disagree with that off the top because you're not learning the system the way most of us has.

And I'm one of those drivers that an agent will call if she has a load leaving from the house before she puts it on the board, #### good paying loads to. But there's also guys she'll call before me as well whose been here just as long or longer.

One thing you should do is put a load subscription in for the house, always see what's leaving when your not home, see if it's a pattern, see if an agent gets plenty of loads out of a certain area. Working the load board/load alerts can be a pain at times, but when you book that perfect week there's no better feeling then looking for that settlement in Friday. Unless is unbelievable gravy, no way I'm going dedicated for anybody over here.

No, I wish I could say I started out with a dedicated run. I did find a few agents that didn't use the board that always seem to have freight sitting there when I call.

It is nice when a good week comes together from the board and contacts, but is never a guarantee or consistent for me.

The load alerts are pretty good. I wish they displayed the same info that's on the board. Or at least provide a link that goes right to that load on the board. That would be sweet.

 

I will be starting orientation with Landstar soon. Is it better to get with an agent or use the load board? Also do drivers make money running in Texas?

 

i would assume you can make money in any state, long as you know how to run your truck, watch your fuel, what load is paying,,etc

 

You always have to book the load by talking to an agent, even if it's on the board. I think it's very beneficial to establish yourself with a few agents that have freight in the lanes you want to run.

As far as Texas goes, you realize the oil bubble crashed, right? That sucked a whole lot of freight out of the market and left a bunch of hungry trucker capacity, which in turn, lowers rates. You'll have to work hard to make running Texas work for you, no matter who you work for.

Yes you can use their trailers for a lesser percentage.

You dispatch yourself, so you run where and when you want. If you can make it running a few days a week, go for it.
