So you get 70 hours in 8 days. Based on your example, you had 10, 10, 10, 9, 9, 9, 9. So 66 hours. You claimed you then had 14 hours available the next day because one of the previous days dropped off. Let's say you used 13 of those 14 hours.
10, 10, 10, 9, 9, 9, 9, 13 = 79. This is 8 days of hours, your 70 hour clock is based on 8 days, and you'd be 9 hours over your 70, and have an HOS violation.

Yep, ditch doctor is correct. On your example you wouldn't get time back till midnight tuesday, and only have 4 hours on Tuesday to use. If you use 7 days, then you have to re-do you math using 60 hrs. And you'd be over your 60 by tuesday. It's 70hrs in 8 days, or 60hrs in 7. But I've never heard of an OTR irregular route carrier use the 60 in 7 model.

The better question you should be asking is, how do you prepare yourself to be an attractive candidate for a better job where you don't have to play the stupid games with the log book in order to make a good living.
work smarter, not harder. Well I guess in trucking it's not harder, it's longer.Last edited: May 8, 2015

Running recap is not about keeping an 8.75 average per day. It is about fitting runs and deliveries to the hours you have available, and maximizing those hours....
It is using those short hour days to your advantage, while waiting to be loaded, or unloaded, or both when it works out perfectly.
run 3 days of 10 hours, then a 4th day of unloading and loading which only use 4 or 5 hours, repeat. and in OTR there are times when you unload early one day, but don't pick up until late the next day, only using a couple of hours each day....
It is all about understanding the rolling window total hours used during the past 7 days, and the current day.TAfool and CrappieJunkie Thank this. -
I really gotta start studying this crap myself. I went local right out of school and I'm log exempt and I'm starting to realize how much I forgot about this stuff. Looking to find a new company and gotta get my crap together.

Pretty simple... Say your previous 8 days look like this.. 9,8,10,9,6,9,10,10... Thats 65hrs.. The next day the 9 will fall off giving you 14hrs. say you work 11 of them which leaves you 3.. The next day the 8 fall off making you have 59 hrs so 11 available.. work all the eleven that day puts you at 70 even but you gain 10 back the next day

If the recap doesn't work out, then you reset. One thing: if you complete the 8th day with just 1 or 2 hours left, you'll start the recap short of hours. A couple of easy days won't hurt much and you can build up some time. More variable in OTR work.
