No matter what, your SWR better as low as possible and should be checked every week incase something changes or you have problem for some weird reason.

Well it won't hurt anything to check it every week, but I've never done that and have never burned out any finals. Using a radio every day, it is pretty easy, in my experience, to pick up on when it isn't preforming normal. I've never seen the SWR change unless you damage the coax or antenna. Once you get it right, it should stay unless damage is done to the antenna system somewhere.

We have a bad problem up this way with anything electrical and metal corrosion.
High moisture in the air and salt and road chemicals really kill anything protected or even worse when not protected.
Even in so called weather proof connections inside a truck will getting corrosion.
Silicon, seal all, j b weld, and a hole pile of things have been used, even bubble gum has been uesd.
Water will go any where it wants.
Many a copper coax went black and green in Newfoundland.

Even had someone from a high corp office brag to me that alumni does not rust... I laughed... " It does here, LOL"

To bad they do not make lead paint any more, that was the paint ever made.

Awww yes, corrosion. It is a good idea to take everything apart and shiney it up every so often.....guess in your case "EHB", that's a lot more often than I'm used to.

Big_m...That "may-have" been true...There use to be a line of radios that looked just like the Galaxy 99v and I think there was one that looked like the 88, but were labeled "Mirage". and were nothing more than Chinese clones that were not near as good as the Galaxy's... (see them every now and then on eBay)

But there is another radio being built now by Ranger called Mirage, that's nothing like the ones your thinking of. There's a Mirage 36HP (AM only) and a Mirage MX-86HP which also has SSB...

Guess Ranger should have came up with a different name for the radio, so not to cause confusion with the lame-Mirage's from earlier...

I had a mirage 44 here, that I was working on for a guy at work. It was exactly the same radio as a galaxy 44v. Same ranger board, controls were the same, made in maylasia. They also made a mirage 6600, 88, 9900. They all looked like the galaxy 88hl, with only the 88 and 9900 having ssb. Can't say for sure that they were made by ranger, as I've never seen them up close. But the mirage 44 was for sure. As far as them beingQC failed galaxys, I've never heard that, but anything's possible.

Mirage 9900, same board as the Galaxy. Pretty old radio and it has had the typical problems, mostly bad solder joints and few other things that I don't remember now, but all in all it's been a good radio.
