    Hey, Guys --

Question for the veteran WallyHaulers ... Brian has a shot at a new schedule: 5/2 -- 5/3. He says that they assured him that he won't make any less money, and that he will be in the same truck all week long. He was also told that his start days will vary immensely (not a problem), that he will even receive occasional "real" weekends off, and that he will be given his schedule for the entire year.

He seems to understand all of this just fine; I, however, am a little confused by it . Input, please??? Thanks bajillions in advance!!!

Hey. I was on a 6/3 and just changed to the 5/2 5/3 program. Basically, you work 5 on 2 off then 5 on 3 off. Weekends come pretty slow but when they do, you get 3 in a row. I'll use me for an example, for July (my next 'real' weekends off).

I work my 5 days then I'm off Fri Sat and Sun. Work 5 days then off Sat and Sun. Work 5 days and off Sat Sun and Mon...and so on. It takes a couple months for the weekends to roll around again but there are a few advantages to this program, compared to a standard 5/2 which would have his days off be the same forever until he got decent seniority, many many years at most DC's, so he'd probably have (or has) Tue and Wed off...

The 6/3 drawbacks are that you work 6 days (by that 6th day you don't want to see a truck LOL), and you seldom get a 'full' day in as you don't have the hours, so your ADP is kept down because if you can do say $350/day for 5 days, then the 6th day you only do $200, when they average the 6 days, it's below the $350 you can make in a full day. On a 5 day schedule you'll get your (his) ADP up to that $350.

The other nice thing is the 5 days seems shorter (well, it IS shorter but SEEMS a LOT shorter). You do lose one $42 layover, but you more than make that up as you are able to work an extra 3 days a month compared to a 6/3. If going from a 5/2, he'll lose some money as he'll be working two LESS days per month, and at that point he'd have to decide what's the priority...money or time off. I picked time off with the 6/3 but the 5/2 5/3 became available and it seemed to me to be a 'happy medium'...I'll still get a 3 day weekend every other week, still have some 'real' weekends, yet make more and increase my ADP compared to my previous 6/3.

Hope that makes sense and helps out some.

Hi, NYVET -- and thank you soooooo much!!!

I'm still not 100% clear on something, though (sorry) ... yes, Brian currently has 5/2 across the board. He comes home very late Tuesday night and has Wed.-Thur. off. He then heads out with Friday as his start day.

So he will lose two days pay per month if he goes from a 5/2 to the 5/2-5/3? Money is his number one priority, though the occasional weekend off is beginning to appeal to him. But he isn't going to like losing any pay :(

He just doesn't get to see his youngest son enough. The way things are now, he only has Wednesday afternoon to spend with the teen, who of course is in school. Then he has track practice, too. So Brian only gets to pick him up, take him for dinner and get him back home.

    Again -- many, many thanks!!!

    :(

Here's the beauty of this program...at least HERE at my DC but I can't imagine this not being allowed elsewhere...have him double-check before signing up if it would be deal breaker...when he gets to his 3-day weekend, especially if it's during the week, he could work the first day (which would be his 6th for that week), then take the two days off, so he could work 5 on, 2 off, 6 on, 2 off, and take the full 3 days off when his days off come on a weekend. That way he wouldn't lose too much money (wouldn't lose that much anyway but money is money).

I'm on that 5/2 5/3 program it's awesome my wife loves it she can plan stuff for weeks out or months out and you get off on weekends and half a weekend in the rotation. I hope he takes it that slip seating is not the way to go. The money is there.

    Buzzard2157 Thanks this.

    Thanks, Tc6868 --

Yes, being able to have a "real" weekend off now and then does appeal to him. So does no longer slip-seating, LOL !!! Good to have lots of different opinions on this ... so far, you guys are all pretty much in agreement.

Well, just to clarify, he'll still 'slip seat' per se, but not multiple times per week. A 'program' like this or the 6/3 has 3 drivers sharing 2 trucks, but he'll have one truck for the whole week, then the other truck next week. It'll be the same 2 trucks, so he'll only need to load it up once at the start and unload when he goes home, then repeat the next week in the other truck.
