If a truck driver is selling it, be carefull![]()
No I am kidding! You can find printers at wal-mart really cheap so I hear!
It worth it dude!
Either way you go:
If you want to fill out your own log sheet that is fine, however you will need to keep the Drivers daily log sheet up and your log sheet. When DOT pulls you over he wants to see the last 7 days worth of log sheets. If you say I am using drivers daily log, he will say ok print them up and if you don't have them printed up then you might get a fine (more than likely you will).
Whatever you do don't tell them you are using drivers daily log and a log book, thats telling them you are keeping 2 log books.
If you use drivers daily log only then print out your log sheet when that log sheet is complete and sign it.
Drivers daily log will tell you
When your 11,14 & 70 hour is up. It does all the math work for you! Look at the grid and it will show you when your 11 & 14 hour is up. It will tell you when you have the split break option(you will use it more if you know you are not going to mess up, and this gives you more miles/money).
It does all the "hard" work for you all you do is type in the info everytime you stop and it does the rest. You can't go wrong!
Is anyone using "Driver's Daily Log" software?

I would find it more time consuming than anything else. Its so easy to just log as I go. When I stop I draw a line. When I finish for the day I tally everthing up. Think about all the extra time it would take to go to your laptop and boot up, make entries, etc. Just use a paper log.
chicadriver Thanks this. -
I used the DDL when I was on the road. Really liked it.

Either way, what works is what works, huh?chicadriver Thanks this. -
What do you keep your logs in ? Do you 3 hole punch them and then put them in a binder or just put them in a folder ?
-
Also keep an extra log book on the truck, just incase it crashes -
But great logging practice so you are good!
You said you stop you draw the line! THAT'S AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11 -

The paper log as a backup is required in order to comply with the regs concerning the DDL. It doesn't need to be filled out, but kept handy if (and when, I will admit that if it can break, it will) your computer or printer dumps on you.
You must print out your log every day, so if your printer does goes south, then you only have to make up today's log. Hmmm, "make up" isn't the best way to say that, I mean "create" today's log. Um... "generate" the log, yeah, that's it.
Anyway, there is also the option of having this program "sign" your log for you. The directions explain the how to but for a quick explanation, here is what to do:
Sign your full, legal name as you would on a log onto a blank sheet of paper. Scan that into the computer, saving it as described in the instructions. Adjust the size of it to fit the signature line of the log. Now when you print the log, you have also signed the log.
There was a bit of controversy about this a couple of years ago, but that has been sorted out. The DOT recognizes that your handwritten signature, in your own hand writing, printed onto the log sheet is the same as you taking a pen to the log sheet every day.
There are some that will still argue this point, but it has been defeated in court. Still, if there is a DOT officer that wants to make a big deal about it and somehow you get a ticket for that, get your lawyer to talk to DDL about it.
What do you mean you can't afford a lawyer? How can you NOT afford one?

OK, the argument is like this: look at any paper currency printed in the USA. See the signatures? They are printed using handwritten signatures, and the currency is just as legal as if each and every bill was hand signed with a pen.
Look at your IRS check you got (or will get). Again, that signature is not hand signed each and every time, but the signature was saved into a computer, and printed onto the document each time it was needed.
There are other examples, the currency one was what got the ticket dismissed.

We have "Laptop Logbook" and like it fine. You have to always have the previous 7 days logs printed out and have to have a printer in the truck in case Mr DOT wants the current 8th day. It calculates hours and also prints out your next pre-trip inspection chart.
