If about 1 in 20 trailers had a "dash-cam" unit mounted, facing back at traffic behind them, and could somehow view all the pertinent footage to see all the following too close, texting, distracted driving, and other sick behaviors, and submit relevant footage to the carrier's safety dept., a lot of this crap would dissipate very quickly.

You think you see a lot with what goes on on front of you? Look closely at what is going on behind you, before they think you can see or care.

The purpose of snitching is to get someone in trouble. This is about responsible concern. This is about keeping people out of trouble. I am taking my CDL permit test tomorrow. I sincerely hope you guys never have to call me in.

Well, if someone is driving like they're crazy with little concern for others, a complaint is certainly the right course of action. You have to remember that there is more at stake than the interests of just that one driver. His co-workers certainly don't need any extra attention from the DOT due to the company's safety rating being affected by that one driver's irresponsible behavior.

If a trucker remains in the job long enough, at some point they will be "called in" on, no matter how "perfect" a driver they may be. Some people over-react to the most benign things, maybe they're having a bad day, or another driver with the same carrier did something stupid around them a week ago, so they look to expect all of those trucks are driven carelessly, or maybe you might have got a little close for a few moments as you waited for a passing car to pass you before you could pass them, or something relatively minor. It's inevitable. What carrier safety departments look for is trends and when call-ins start to happen several times inside of 6 months or less, then they know they have a problem developing.

There are a few out there who's life mission is to call in on every truck driver who might have looked at them wrong and simply was unfortunate enough to encounter them on the same stretch of road at the same time. They don't need to see bad behavior, they can/will fabricate it. it's some sort of psychological disorder with them.

Whatever, don't call in while driving, or you'll be calling yourself in, and keep your eyes on the road, instead of looking in windows (unless someone with fake hair cuts you off, yeah, I'm still looking for a pay phone on that issue).

I called a crst in one time. But by my judgement I think it was the right thing to do. Maybe saved his life idk I took off after the lane opened up but,

When they were doing construction in winnemucca nv, one lane was dug out about 3 feet with the big barrle cones and it was about 3am this driver kept hitting cones and they would either fly off to the side or his back against his trailer and right in front of me. I was like okay I'll deal with it. But then he swerved sharp and his trailer went down the cut out lane and the whole left side of the tandems came off of the ground rocks and debre, dust shot towards me so I backed off even more and right before it changed back to two lanes he did it again I was blown away. My initial thought was he was just fetigued so I called the #on the trailer.. The company didn't seem too concerned. He said "I'll send them a message" yeah sure while he's swerving let him try to read the Qualcomm. But let's be real if we called every dumb driver in we'd be on the phone all day.

I've made mistakes but, I've Been fortunate enough to never do too bad and I had a pick up truck call me in

The only time I've ever did that was when I was behind a school bus on a two lane going 15 miles under the speed limit. When two lanes became four I found the driver yapping on his cell phone.

That's a nice example to set for children.

I do not want to believe that as a habit, we call in on drivers on a daily or nightly basis. It is (in my opinion) that we call in on what we perceive to be the most reckless or dangerous situations out there. Sometimes a driver can be trying to avoid ramming a car that suddenly cut him off, so we would watch first for any situation that caused the driver to swerve or brake suddenly.

Yes, we would be on the phones all day long if every little infraction were to be called in, but over all, I am going to say that we do use good judgment first, before we drop a dime.
