I need some advice. I am currently looking to get into truck driving. Its always been a dream of mine. I do not have my CDL so I would need training. I do have a criminal record though. And it consists of some felonies. So I need to know how to go about getting my CDL, preferably through a trucking company that provides training. I don't want to take the risk of leaving my job that I have now to go get my my CDL and then not be able to find a job. I know that with my record I might not be able to get the hazmat endorsement but would I need that for flatbad or refrigration? I could try and get my record expunged in 2 years. But im really hoping I don't have to wait that long. Any responses or advice would help out a ton!

I can't say for sure, but once you even apply for the CDL permit? No records can be expunged.

Don't remember where I had heard that however, but if true, then you had better wait those 2 years, maybe a bit longer.

This may seem like a really personal issue, but the exact nature of your record will dictate what you can and can't do. I guarantee that you can't do cross border trucking into Canada. In general, trucking companies require a criminal record check, driver's abstract, and 5-10 year work history before they will consider you. Assuming that your record isn't bad enough to get you blacklisted, the problem with getting your CDL through a trucking company is that you are little more than an indentured slave until your course is paid off.

Well, I was convicted in 2010. And the charges have to do with theft. Well since I am not embarrassed n I need to know if I would ever be able to have a career in driving. The charges were burglary, receiving stolen property and trespassing

So would I have a better chance at waiting a few years. Seeing if I can get my record expunged and then try for my CDL?

Some felonies? As in how many exactly? I'm not prying and it's not really any of my business but most companies will want to know.
They'll also want to know what type of felonies you have. Anything to do with theft, robbery, fraud, or sex crimes will probably disqualify you immediately.
There are some companies, bottom feeders mostly, that will hire you with a felonly record. Just be aware that your choices will be very limited and your opportunities very few.
Good luck to you. There are other ways to make a living besides truck driving.

Trucks have hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of product. Don't think many will trust you with that responsibility with your background.

Personally I think truck drivers have a bad enough rep as it is and don't want guys like you in this profession.

I remember years back I had a job hauling high end furniture. Came to work one day and saw one of my fellow drivers being escorted by the cops in handcuffs. Turns out they had him on video parking the truck a few miles away and his accomplish would show up in a uhaul and they stole expensive leather couches.

So keep your job, they'll be too much temptation for you and you'll go back to jail.
