My wife will be finishing school on the 27th of this month. I will probably be able to get back here in mid July to pick her and my dog up for the drive out to Birmingham. Then she will attend their two day class and go out with me as her trainer.
Yes I have to admit I'm excited and nervous at the same time. Nervous sounds kind of strange to me, but it's been twenty years since I've ran the road. Don't know much about these new setups and low RPM's. But I will catch on fast. For the last five years of running end dumps, most of the equipment has has 18, 13, and 15 double over transmissions. Haven't driven a 10 speed in years. But hey, no problem just have to pay more attention when it comes to lower R's and of course listen to the engine.
Been running a Volvo A35D rock truck for the last week.
Anyways, got some of the house packed up. A lot of stuff going in the trash or giving away. Her son and nephew will finish the packing and put what's left into storage. Then we will be on our way to hopefully fullfilling our quest of banking the checks and buying our house. If all goes well, we should have a pretty good down payment by late spring early summer. Will be keeping a look out in G.V.
Went out to Lucerne Valley last Sat. to p/u my grandson for a week. On the way out, I only saw one Schneider. Did see a bunch of Knight and Swift. The Sch. truck did have a number on the doors to call. However the truck traffic in itself was slow. Not like it use to be. Also saw a couple of CR England but ahhhhh didn't think anybody cared about them.
Good Luck to everyone here. I'm not leaving to Sunday night around 8pm. So I will be back on before I leave. But want to wish everyone the best now in case I'm not. Once I'm able to get a laptop, I will update everyone. But in all likelyhood, I don't see that until late August.

    Take Care :biggrin_25525:

As one here in the sand box for 5 years now driving and running with some of your so called professional Military truck drivers i understand why companies don't hire them in the states. Ok i too have hauled anything that will fit on the back of a flat bed low boy or drop deck here and most i wouldn't touch in the states because they weren't exactly the safest things in the world but in a war zone the troops need there stuff so you haul it. Now i did this in a soft side mercedes or a Iveco european truck not a 915 or any of those fancy Military trucks with armour all over them and all the fancy radios and sufisticated electronics you have. And i have been blown up shot at bombed rocks thrown at me RPG's shot at me and even had a 4 IED's go off on my truck not at the same time mind you. And had to run like hell when the bad guys were shooting and the military couldn't shoot back because of there rules of imgagement. Now tell me how you got 25,000 mile in this country when its not but 500 miles long and 250 or 300 east to west. and most trans companys only run out and back from there hub to there out lying sights.

Now the reason most civilian companies want hire you is as follows.
    1. No log books.
    2. No DOT experiance since US Govt is exempt from it own laws. IE scales and inspections. Good thing half the junk you drive would be red tagged in a minute.
    3. Insurance says 2 years minimum in a OTR position.
    4. 25 year old most aren't when they get out of the service.
    5. Past track record is that they need to be trained out of the follow blindly with our question mentality.

I could be seeing a down turn that may effect driver hiring.

I started coming to this website to get a sense of what is happening in trucking because I want to get into driving. I was looking for information on trucking companies that have a good reputation for training, and a good place to work.

Swift was the first company I read about. They have a depot about 12 miles from me. The posts were not to good. I thought about everything that was said and I came to realize that Swift is a truck driver training company that helps people get their CDL and at the same time make money off of them while they are driving. It's a fair exchange. The students get a year in and they move on. I came to like Schneider. I went out and asked drivers some questions.

I wanted to find out about the hiring. I discovered that a lot of people get into trucking and a lot get out; it's not an easy life. This is one of the reasons why there's such a high turn over.

Most importantly I wanted to find out if there is going to be a big slow down. At the time I believed that truck driving may slow down and it may be a little more difficult to get on with a company. Not many people on this website offered much info on this subject. I made my own observations on this subject. About a month ago I called Schneider to find out about getting on with them from Fontana, CA. I was told there were only excepting students that would agree to drive teams. This was the first sign of a hiring slow down. My disadvantage is that I don't know how they hired previously. (Meaning they may always hire team driver's).

For the last two weeks I have noticed that trucks that use to come around regularly have not been showing up. Schneider is one of these companies. Last week "thestoryteller", here on this thread, said that Schneider trucks had their phone numbers painted out.

Now, we don't have a lot to go on but we have to formulate are thought's based on the world around us. It could be to soon to tell but it looks like there's a meaningful slow down in trucking.

Yesterday I went up to the T/A here in Kingman as I usually do. The gas price was back down from $4.07 to $3.97. The truck count was still down and trucks I usually see were not there. I went to the Flying J. Gas was $3.97. There was a line of trucks on to the street. Companies I usually see were not there.

Car traffic was way down, and the car count at the gas stations is way down.

My conclusion. People are cutting way back. Car's are noticeably absent from the streets and gas stations. Trucking is visually slowing down. It follows that truck driving jobs will probably slow way down also. Many people come to this website to find this information out. I hope this put some of the info in a nutshell. :biggrin_25521:

If you had called Schneider five or ten years ago, you would have been told the same thing.

The Fontana terminal is more interested in team operations, rather than solo.
And the few solo drivers they DO have, aren't newBees.
They've usually been with Schneider for several years.

Schneider also has dedicated runs as well as dedicated local gigs available, but again, not usually offered to a newBee.

If your desire is to be hired by a good company with excellent training, if you need training, and that also has a higher ceiling that most of the bottom-feeder Big training companies DON'T have to offer, Schneider could open some doors for and with you.

Gettin' hired by Schneider isn't the easiest thing to do. But, once hired, it's a good company to remain with and reap the rewards that a minimum of a four or five year commitment can produce.

If you're tryin' to get your foot in the Big truckin' door, and it requires that you run team, do what'cha gotta do.
    Run team!

If y'all think Big truck truckin' is like Burger King, ---- where y'all can get it YOUR way, your order will most likely be cold before you even get what'cha thought you ordered.
You WILL, however, have already paid for it.

When first startin' out in the truckin' industry, the more fussy y'all are, the lees likely you'll make a success of big truck truck drivin' --- and if y'all don't stand for SOMEthing, you'll keep fallin' for the same ol' unrealistic promises from the low-ball companies who make it a habit of fleecing the gullible, demanding, newBee masses.
Plenty more where THEY came from.

    And ya know what?
They seem to be correct --- 'cause they just keep coming and coming and coming.
And complaining and complaining and complaining, about what they find.
    So they go somewhere ELSE,
to get more of the same.
    And the complaining continues.

If you were given airline tickets to an exotic place you've always wanted to visit, and that airline promised you preferential treatment as a freeBee flyer, would y'all just jump right in with both feet? -----
Before, --- as you're boarding the aircraft, ..... y'all get the news that the particular airplane y'all are on, is expected to crash ANY day now, ------ but until it DOES, ....it's a BARGAIN of a deal, .......... would y'all stay on --
    or get the hail off?
    And wonder what'cha missed.

And if it lands safely, again, ..... would you feel ripped-off 'cause you PROBABLY could'a made it all the way?

In other words, would y'all see that complementary adult drink as half full, or half empty?
    Too strong?
    Too weak?
    Too little, ..... too late?
    Not what'cha expected and/or preferred?
And/or too expensive to buy one of your own?

    LAST CALL!
    Goin' down
    for the final count.

Put'cher head betwixt your legs, brace yourself, and prepare to meet your maker.

There seems to be a never-ending supply of those who continually choose abuse from just about every sleezy outfit out there --- over just payin' their dad-gummed dues with a BETTER company, keep a clean driving record and a good attitude, and make wiser choices to get ahead.

I want it ALL, ---- and I want it
    NoW!
    :biggrin_25516:
    To each their own.
Only YOU know what you want,
and what you'll accept to get your career on the road.

If y'all are just lookin' for the easiest, most convenient way to git 'er done --- you just might find it ain't as easy as y'all thought.

If y'all want "easy" ----- IMO
Y'all just might be a tad too lazy to cut the mustard.
"Hard" seems to be a good teacher, but how long should "hard" last?
And, if it's "easy" at first ---- what's it really worth?

The doctor told me, due to serious health risks, I need to shed 200 pounds.
And I figure that's what I gotta do.

SOoooo, does ANYbody know of a pill I can take that will cause me to lose weight without actually doin' anything hard at all myself?

I see no good reason to exert any effort if I can manage to find a way to do it easily, even if it means it'll take longer, if it happens at all.

Maybe by the time I figure that out, I coulda lost all that weight, instead of lookin' for the easiest way to succeed at failure.

But before I waste my time putting forth a sincere effort, I'm gonna try a company that the movie stars advertise worked for them.
Before they gained it all back again.

    But HeY!
At least they lost weight, once, ........ right?
And without breaking a sweat, they found all that weight they effortlessly lost
    again.
    Imagine that.

    Easy is as easy does.

    Wax on
    Wax off.
So simple a caveman probably wouldn't do it. :biggrin_25512:

I'll have to take a break and come back to this a little later. I forgot what the beginning said. :biggrin_25526:

Ok, I think I'm ready to chew on just a bit of this. Truck driving is, for lack of a better word, a life style. A difficult life style. And like the song says "you can't always get what you waaant, you can't always get what you waaant".

Now loseing weight, is a life style also. And it can be a difficult transition. I'll try to simplify, begin by stop eating bread, and all things like it.

Mick Jagger's song is a perfect illustration of the point I'm tryin' to get across ----

You can't always get what'cha want
    BUT, if you try sometime
    YOU just might find
    You get what'cha NEED.

Thanx for reminding me, Mann. :yes2557:

    Mann -

Hate to say it, but Shock is right. And I'm saying it as a newbie. I used to be VP of a telephone company - but I am fully aware that as a newbie trucker, I am going to be the bottom of the pile. I'm going to get the loads nobody wants. I'm going to sit in parking lots more than the experienced drivers, because THEY will get the loads while I wait.

Eventually, though, *I* will be Mr Senior driver.. so long as I make enough to make ends meet until then, I'm fine.

Does this mean I'll work for a bottom feeder company? Yes. I have an app in with Werner, and if nothing else had come to me by the end of May, I was prepared to go work for them. Fortunately, my patience and perseverance paid off. I got a call from Schneider and May on the same day. I *almost* went with Schneider - they were offering a salaried position to a complete newbie... but in the end, I decided that the position was not what I wanted, and am now in training with May.

(As far as I am aware, by the way, the position is still available here in the Denver area. Utility driver (Fill in for other drivers who are out - sick, vacation, etc) on dedicated routes.... delivering auto parts)

There are far, far, worse places you could end up than Schneider. And worse ways to drive than as a team. Sure, you'll be "B" seat and make a little less than your partner - but you will also be given the opportunity to learn (your partner SHOULD be an experienced driver... dunno if he would be or not). You could think of it as an extended session with a trainer. If you don't like it, after a year, move on.

If you are that serious about driving, maybe you should move. (I seem to recall you mentioning that as a possibility). Find out where your favorite carrier IS hiring, and go there. Get a PO Box and live in a camp ground, if need be. Do anything you can think of to improve your chances. Well, short of maybe murdering current drivers. That would probably be bad.

(just for the record, I am strongly against any diet that eliminates anything at all. In particular things like carbs, as they are needed for mental well being. If you want to change your diet over all, research the diabetic's diet. It's hands down the best for you. )
