I had my 2nd lesson today (of actual driving). I was backing a tractor and trailer in a spot, approaching from 90 deg. Lining my tractor drive tires with the spot and turning hard right. The part I found hard was knowing how long to stay in the turn to position the truck properly for the back up.My instructor was not offering any tips on how to know when you've held the turn long enough. Can anyone offer any pointers or tricks you've picked up.
    Thanks for any advice.

I realize I may not have described it correctly since there are other situations for backing 90 deg. I am approaching from 90 deg turning hard right and then turning hard left to straighten the truck inline with the spot. I was not staying in the turn long enough and ended up not centered well with the spot.

Honestly practice is the key for getting better. Different rigs/trailers turn differently so it just comes down to time behind the wheel in my opinion.

I did much better today. I watched some videos last night and picked up a couple of mistakes a was making so that helped.Still a long way to go but I was not anywhere near as frustrated at then end of the lesson.

One good tip is to set yourself up as good as possible before beginning. It makes it quicker and easier.
Each tractor and trailer steers different, so the way you set yourself up before backing will be a little different in every truck.

That was great advice, don't hit a mirror.
I'm pretty good at backing up, every spot requires a different set up, I think. I can't explain it.
Backing takes practice, when you get your own truck,,, practice all the time in bigger truck stops. Anyone can drive forwards.
Most drivers can't back up anyways, they keep circling the truck stop, waiting for the elusive pull thru spot to open, when there are dozens of back in spots available.
Relax, you'll get it. Just don't hit a side mirror !!

There is a delay between when you stop turning and when your trailer reacts so if your still turning when your trailer reaches the spot , you have waited to long, it's somewhat difficult to explain but you will learn it with practice. I also agree take your time to set yourself up right a good start can make things easier. Try to start corrective steering slightly before you think you need to and see the difference it feels weird at first because you feel like you should still be turning the wheel but after the delay the trailer is in position. Practice practice practice
