Today was my first time doing it in a truck and I have to say I was expecting it to be a lot worse than it was. Now I can see how it would be pretty bad during the winter.
I remember Stevens prohibited us from running it as we didn't have engine brakes back then but now having run it, I didn't think it was any worse than Donner Pass or the Grapevine. Or even I17 southbound.
I70 between Grand Junction and Denver.

it sucks in the winter, but if the weather is good I like going that way.

Yeah, that's another one. Stevens didn't chain so maybe that's another reason but it was prohibited year round, not just during the winter.
Granted in 2 years I never had a load that running 70 would have made it shorter so I never had a reason to run it.Rick Brown Thanks this. -

Oh yeah. My dad was born in Leadville.Rick Brown Thanks this.

When the yuppie ski crowd discovered Leadville, houses that became near worthless when the mines shut down suddenly became prime real estate. A lot of my relatives who lived there sold out, cashed in and moved to Denver.

I think I had to chain 1 time, and I paid someone to do that, on Donner.

People race down that hill like its the indy 500, Back in the day if you got down it safe and slow it was something to pat your self on the back for. Now its how fast can you push it with out rolling the truck or lose it.
