Let me begin by saying I've drove a truck for 35 years have owned and operated my own trucks have worked both union and non union , in fact at one point I worked for a major CDL School has a CDL Instructor, in 2012 my Mother became sick and was battling Stomach Cancer, among other serious Health problems, being that most trucking companies have large invested fleets, and many loads a day to cover, I did not want to be caught out on the road, when that last few minutes came among us. And ol how I was dreading this... so with that I volunteered to turn my CDL in my physical was due and I had so much on my mind along with a heavy heart, unfortunately my mother passed and went home to the lord, it left me devastated, it no doubt was the worst pain and worst times of my life, in fact I ended up getting some much needed counseling, I ended up going on my Social Security, but as most people know it's truly hard to live on social security, so I decided to go back to the trade and Industry I have a part of all these years, I go to the Indiana BMV , take the written test, no problem, then a physical still no problem, then I scrape together 175.00 to take the skills test , make a appt , go to this TDI test site across from flying J in Whiteland Indiana , meet this young Testing guy, he seems very rude right off, like a hey I'm the boss attitude, I tell him I'm there to take the skills test, he quickly collects the 175.00 and then goes off in some back room , then finally comes out and gives me my change and a receipt, we walk out to the truck , he begins by telling me what he wants to hear and how it should be said, so I begin with the pre-trip Inspection I done it exactly like I taught it at the school I had worked at previously, I then do the 4 point break check, he then tells me I failed , I ask why he tells me well you said brake lines I needed to hear brake hoses, then you didn't start your 4 point brake check with step 1 then step 2 then step 3 and lastly step 4 as you went through the steps , so every time you called a hose a line and each time equal 4 times of the steps of the brake check I counted it wrong , so I ask can I retake the test , he says yes but it will cost you yet another 175.00 everytime you take it. This is a money pit , we never rolled a wheel, yet he failed me because I didn't Repete it perbadem from the BMV manual, I'm 57 years old I say a lot of thing maybe different then I did once before, I good to remember that much, just ask my wife, this is so wrong on so many levels, if I was a foreigner they would walk me through the test and help me but I'm just a old trucker that has served in the military and paid taxes all. These years, and now I'm a no body, I may not be a book scholar but I can back a trailer in the middle of the night down a dark alley in Chicago and not tear any equipment up, I can drive close to 4 million miles with only 2 accidents in 35 years , just a plain out ripoff , to fail because you didn't say it like the way I wanted to hear it. This is Pathetic. ...GOD BLESS AMERICA ,

Illinois failed a guy for saying "air pressure guage" instead of "air pressure indicator."
The problem is the state hires some henpecked nitwit to do a job they're not qualified for and never will be qualified for.
When you left the testing site, the guy was probably high-fiving himself and saying to himself, "Dang, I really showed that trucker who is the big boss man."
Go to a different testing site.

One idea is to get your permit at the DMV then test out through a refresher course with a company in Indiana such as Roehl, Sodrel, Celadon. These all have schools in Indiana.

These refresher schools have a better working relationship with the DMV testers.

Condolences on the passing away of your mother. May she rest in peace. May God be with her for all eternity.

This young man who "tested" you needs someone to give him a serious "attitude adjustment". There is no reason for him to be disrespectful to anybody, whatsoever.

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!

You should be speaking with his supervisor, your state representatives, and anyone else who either has a position of authority over the little nincompoop or is in a position to look further into the matter. Personally, I have a short fuse when it comes to stupidity and people ripping me off...and I probably would've landed myself in jail after removing some of his teeth, adjusting his nose, and retrieving the money I had given him for the test. Since you had the self restraint to avoid rearranging his face and going to jail, do the next best thing...go over his head and report the power-tripping little ########. I'd be willing to bet 90% of the people he's "passed" probably couldn't put their finger on a drag link...only know that they are supposed to stand next to the front tire and say "steering linkage" and that they checked to make sure it wasn't "cracked, broken, or missing".

BTW: "brake lines OR hoses" is on this CDL checklist...EITHER way should be acceptable.

That's good info. Print it and take it back to the DMV and ask for a supervisor. If they give you any resistance tell them you're taking it to the governor and state attorney general because they falsified your test results and kept your money by deception.

Vincinnes University near you has CDL classes. They probably know an ethical tester. Locations in Vincinnes, Plainfield and Fort Branch.

www.vinu.edu. Type CDL in the search box.

CDL refresher courses are available for previous CDL holders.
For more information about courses in Vincennes / Ft. Branch, please contact Tina Winters, TTDT Instructor, at 812-888-5150 or twinters@vinu.edu.
For information about courses in Indianapolis, please contact Dennis Poteet at dpoteet@vinu.edu.

    Good luck driver.

Florida is very easy, I have seen guys without knowledge of English passed pre trip inspection by memorizing names of parts and safety phrases, no cracks no damage, tight an secure, no leaks and you will pass pre trip, also lab test is important, Engine off, ignition on push push and you are done :D
