    IMO ;
    I wouldn't turn up horsepower unless the engine was in very good shape internally and oil consumption was low. More power equals more stress and heat. I have a lot of power, but I only use all of it sporadically when passing or climbing sometimes. 90 % is normal driving where the power isn't really needed. But I find I use less fuel than before the TUNE was done. Only the tuner knows how to get this as a result.

    I've got a 14L ddec4 in my new glider.
    I had rebel127 tune it and put a 171702 on it also .
    It's only got 15,000 miles on it so far, but very impressed!
    I've always been a cat guy but this detroit is growing on me lol

    The engine from the factory was a bit of a turd but now it pulls as good as my other truck with a 2ws cat with 600 bs file.

    Next go around instead of a rebuild I'd like to drop a 14L in mine. Already been rebuilt 2x she's earned it.

    I can't decide if I want spend money for someone's tune or just wait until I need a rebuild. I am not sure if I would gain any in fuel mileage as the engine uses so much oil. I hear you on using the power only when needed. It certainly is enjoyable to drive a lazy man's and let it do all the work.

    Is it burning oil or leaking it? If the engine has too much blowby or messed up injectors, that needs to be addressed first.

    Tune it when you rebuild or after all other issues are addressed

    I'd leave the original tune as is now and even after the rebuild. Run it that way for a month or so to see the fuel mileage and get a feel for where the power is. Then upgrade the tune and see what happens. The old do a change here see how it goes, then do another change later there and see what that does. Instead of several different things all at once cause that's hard to judge. My motor felt completely different after the inframe even though the tune was not changed. To be honest, and I still feel this way even after 150,000+ miles on the rebuild, it seems to not be as strong as it was originally.
