He could be a transfer driver, or a bulk delivery driver. Those companies have a variety of driving positions that could be open and be home every night/day.

Im in my 50's and runnin groceries with a lift gate because I enjoy the work, and because I want to remain in decent physical condition when I get older. I dont know of many driving jobs that require lifting over 50 lbs these days.
The common TV show trucker you see (fat guy) lugging a great big heavy box out of the trailer, just don’t exist in reality. -
I just got my cdl and am home everynight. We haul honda, nissan, and toyota parts. Just in time freight, so no playing around. We hook and go. Mostly drop and hook and made over a grand a week during training. We do put in long days though. Yes its possible.
Mr.X Thanks this. -
Apply at all the line haul ltl places in your area. More and more good companies are hiring and training new drivers.

Problem with not having a physically delivery job food service or P&d ltl makes it hard to get a good job locally for noobs. But like others say Linehaul LTL. Depends on your area. If not you might have to start out with Cement then network your way into pulling flatbed equipment or doing end dump. Until you can get a year then you can have a better chance at finding a bump dock job locally.

A lot of those bulk transfer spots are for drivers that been there. It's a seniority thing. A lot of bay drivers looking for the easy life too. Gotta wait in line unless it's a busy terminal.

Your a mIle ahead of most just by asking that question. Take the first local job that you can get even if it's garbadge and get to know some drivers. The good jobs don't get advertising.

LTL or tanker jobs. Those jobs are out there for new CDL grads.
Couple of recent posts from 2 new CDL grads; one went with Trimac, home every night and the other with Bulkmatic, home every night. Bulkmatic usually requires 12 months experience, but he ignored that and applied anyway.
If you live in the Southwest try Coastal Transport; again the website says 12 months experiece required, but this company has been hiring lots of new CDL grads the past year. -
I don't know about that. Local work does get you home most nights but after 8 hours of sleep and simple chores, personal hygiene, and your commute to and from work, you have very little free time.
Not to say all local work is miserable, but think about it before you take a low paying local gig just to sleep at home every night. -
Schlepping those tanker hoses around doesn't look much better than tossing a case of beer. Get haz mat and doubles/ triples endorsements and hit up the ltl companies for a linehaul spot. Most linehaul is done at night so you will probably be on night shift but you go home daily.
