and if you made the cut - and waited it out you would have had many years of great pay and bennies...
and grandfathered into one of the other freight lines when they went under...
how long were you with CF?
most guys are "absorbed" into the fold after a few months.
Yellow, and now also Sygma.

I worked for them for abut a 1yr. It was a second job for me. Me and the supervisor didn't get along, especially after he called my wife one night yelling at her about me not bieng there. The thing was if he just looked he would have seen me there all night.. She was so upset, she called the police, local hospitals, looking to see if I was involved in a accident.. So the next night me and him got into it about him yelling at my wife.. We were toe to toe, and he almost landed on the floor, so I just quit, and he fired me as well..
Big Duker Thanks this. -
sooooooo you threw away a good job over a conflict...
I do not thk that is grounds to dammmmn a new guy looking at the job as an option.
conflicts like that could have happened ANYWHERE..
as for that supervisor - there was a mechanism in place to take care of that problem -
instead of quiting or being a hot head you HAVE to use that mechanism.Last edited: Jun 24, 2008

Well a quick update. I went for the drug screening today for Yellow, and tomorrow I have the agility test. My background check already came back fine and I know I will pass these next two easily. I could be working for them by the end of this week or beginning of next.
As far as Sigma goes, I go out for a route ride tomorrow to see how I like it. If all goes well with Sigma I could be working for them within 1-2 weeks. I would start at Sigma full time as a drivers helper, which pays $800-$1000 a week. After 6 months I can be a driver, which make upwards of $65k a year.
I think both these companies could be very good career choices. Unfortunately my position at the moment is I need full time now, 40+ hours a week.
So Im still going with Yellow, because it a sure bet right now, but if Sigma offers me a job?? Well, it will be a tough decision, put it that way.
I would like to think long term, but right now, its here and now I have to worry about.I could always stay with Sigma for a year or so, get a year driving experience and then apply with Yellow, ABF or such. -
do what you feel is best - but at age 40 - your back will thank you if you go freight!!
I have known many guys who ran foodservice and the ones who started in their early 20's have all moved on by age 40 due to the physical stress.
I have got myself settled into an "old mans" job - and enjoy not having to pop pain releivers every 4 hours! -
I will keep your advice in mind dude. I will find out tonight just how bad sigma is, and take that into consideration. I like the idea of working for a union, but don't know if right now is exactly the best time. I know you say that you can get 30,40 or more hours................but what if I only get 15-20?? Then how long to make the list, 1-2-3 months or more?? My other concern is the economy, if freight slows down with Yellow, I will be the 1st to get laid off. Yellow in my area just laid off 2-3 workers on 3rd shift.
Right now, I'm in a bad financial situation and need to get working ASAP!!
Anyhow, thanks for your advice, and I will keep my options open for the meantime. -

kilroy2963, So how did it go? I'm close to being in your shoes. Grad SAGE in a couple of weeks, but I have 6 years CDL driving mixers. Lots of jobs around here, but great paying jobs in the oil fields driving tanker/water, like 90,000+. Hard work and long hours, and I'm not as young as I once was. Food companies always hiring around here (US Foods, SYSCO, Mile Hi (McD's), Dominoes Pizza) and have good pay and really nice rigs. BUT, union bennies and pay, hours of service, rules the companies actually have to abide by, working hard but not killing yourself. Your a couple of years younger than me, and I'm sure that somewhere before you went for pay over job, and ended up kicking yourself. Anyhow, hope it all works out for you.
