Here in MD, the nuclear power plant at Calvert Cliffs does nothing close to that.

Before Exelon took it over, you stopped at the gate, the guard asked for your license and paperwork, looked inside the trailer, and away you went.

Now, they don't even do that. The gate is now unmanned. There is just s sign posted now saying "please proceed to AUTHORIZED destination".

The Patriot Act may have given them permission to search your truck without permission. But, I agree that if the officer asks then he knows he doesn't have cause. In the past, police could not search your vehicle without probable cause or your permission without having a search warrant. I got pulled over about 12 miles from home a couple of months ago. My wife had just gotten out of the hospital. The cop was a city policeman sitting on the freeway. I pulled into a truck stop where I was planning on parking. He asked for my log book, which I was not obligated to give him. He did not even know how to read it. He said he was training another cop who was with him. I humored him for a few minutes, but was in a hurry to get home so my wife was not alone. He said he pulled me over because I was empty. I pull a step deck. I told him if that was the reason he pulled me over that he would be pulling me over a lot. I informed him that he did not have jurisdiction to pull me over on a freeway, politely, of course. He was not dot certified. He asked to look inside of my truck. I declined and told him that unless he was going to write me a ticket that I did not have any time and that I was done. He said he wasn't going to write a ticket, so I got back in my truck and parked. I was polite the entire time, but did get impatient with him, especially when I question his authority to even pull me over and with my wife being ill and just out of the hospital, did not want to waste my time. The cop was young, as was his trainee. He was polite. I understand that these policemen have a job to do. According to this cop there is a lot of drug traffic in the area, some of it being brought through with trucks.

You don't have to give cops permission to search your truck. Most of them will tear things up and you will need to tidy up once they are finished. That is one reason why I don't like going to military bases if the threat level is high. I once had one with mud on his feet to search my truck after me telling him to take his boots off. He didn't. If you enter a military installation you are subject to being searched. You may or may not be searched, depending on the threat level and the type of base. But, you are always subject to search. You won't know until you get to the gate. Since Obama has been in office most bases will no longer allow you to leave your weapons at the gate. Most will not even allow you to enter with a weapon. That is something to keep in mind if you plan on arming yourself.

I don't do drugs. I don't sell drugs or anything else. I have nothing to hide, but I don't like anyone violating my rights. Things have changed in this country when it comes to the Constitution, Bill of Rights and personal freedom.

They do have a well armed security force, with their own on-site shooting range. I've seen them carrying M-4's sometimes.

That's strange. All the plants I hauled in to were Exelon plants.

Well, the place is in a somewhat remote location. Maybe that had something to do with that decision.

More then likely he wrapped the question of searching your vehicle into the conversation and you just didn't realize what you answered ok to.

^^^^THIS! No cop will ever ASK for permission of they have PC! In most states if they use the PC excuse and they DON'T find anything you can come after them legally for an illegal search.

In most states signs don't carry force of law or authority to search. You have a right to privacy within your vehicle unless you sign it away. Driving past a sign doesn't do that. Here in VA I can park my truck on SCHOOL property with a loaded firearm and it's completely legal because the inside of my truck is the same as the inside of my home legally. Of course it needs to STAY in there while I go in. Even with signs having no force of law most of the time, you as a person inside their bldg MAY be different! So keep that in mind.

Obviously federal property and border crossings have it their way thanks to their signs having implied consent. That's not the case in most states though.

Am I the only one that finds this scary as hell? I would think that it being " remote" would make it even more of a potential target for terrorists!

Wouldn't a taser work better in a confined space?
"Hold on, mr bad type guy, I have to put in my earplugs so I don't rupture my eardrums when I pull the trigger in the cab of this truck."
