The mega carriers have conditioned drivers to be how they are. Is the OP looking at candidates from mega carriers? That is how most drivers seem to get their CDL and experience, thus they are conditioned not to have pride in their job and equipment.
Hey OP, I'm gonna shoot you a PM with a couple of possible candidates. Sometimes you have to think outside the bucket.

All good point/suggestions E, but here is the thing, EVERYBODY out there wants the most money per mile they can get, so if you put out a decent number that you hope gets the "right" kind of people in the door, you are left with little reserve in which to "reward" people with.
I would love to be able to pay 13,14,1500.00 per week and then still be able to reward the people that do the better job, but the extra money just isn't there.
On the other hand, you tell someone that you can only pay 1000.00 a week and you have this bonus and that bonus, I have to wonder who replies to that ad?
Also as mentioned here before, it's becoming more apparent that money and a nice truck just doesn't seem to be enough anymore, I'm just not sure what else there is if you are a true OTR long haul company?Billerd Thanks this. -

Drivers are so conditioned to getting lied to by trucking companies, especially the megas, that they don't trust bonus plans.Billerd Thanks this. -
Bonus this and bonus that would not motivate me in the least. Just pay me and don't use goofy bonus systems.
I used to be a service manager at a new car dealership. We used to do all kinds of bonus programs to reward guys for properly inspecting vehicles, suggesting needed services etc... It was designed to motivate guys (mostly those that were not doing their jobs properly) by putting a few extra bucks in their pockets. Guess who got the big checks? The guys that were already doing their job properly.
My point is that people have it or they don't. Bonus systems are a feel good band aid you use to try and get what you want out of people.Shaggy, Aggravated Owner, RStewart and 4 others Thank this. -
After a few months, you look around and see who isn't getting the bonus.
Then you retrain or replace them, as you see fit. -

Doesn't everyone?
I hate hiring new people, it is the absolute worst thing about running a small fleet, I would rather deal with the pinheads at Government agencies than spend the day sifting through application after application, and even after picking out the very best ones, you sadly find that they are on the lower end of what YOU were expecting in a "Professional Driver"
Rant over, just having a bad day, my back been giving me fits and I haven't had a good nights sleep in a week.brian991219, tsavory, Billerd and 2 others Thank this.
