From what I can see (M) Metal coil endorsement is just a New York thing. But not sure and I can't find any practice test for it either. One guy said California had the same thing. But I wasn't able to find it either.

A state cannot require more training than the federal government requires for your CDL. Alabama had a metal coil endorsement that was challenged in court. Alabama lost because their requirements were more restrictive than the federal government's. New York would not require a coil endorsement.

How New York does the motorcycle license. Its now a endorsement in this state. Its under what license class you have. So like I have a CDL-C under my class its CM. (CDL-C) & (M) for motorcycle. (L) in New York is not a endorsement (L) means no air brakes under restriction in New York. The only endorsement we can get in New York are.

Yeap so it must be just a New York thing then. When I went in to try and take the test but failed. What was on the test was never brought up in the special book they have for it. But the DMV lady was giving crap cause I was getting for a CDL-C and not for anything higher. She CDL-C was just basically for medical transport. But I work for a Fabrication shop and they have a 26ft box truck with air brakes. But its under 26,000 lbs. But because it has air brakes I had to get the cdl. From my understanding the CDL-C was enough for that. But since we transport aluminium coils. Weighing 8,000 lbs I was told by dot inspection that I need the (M) endorsement for metal coil

Ok, I did a little research. If you hold a NY state CDL and want to haul coils in NY state, you'll need the endorsement. If you're not licensed in NY state, or are licensed in NY state but don't haul coils in NY state, then you don't need the endorsement.
