When I know I am getting close I just let it coast back while it slows, if I need to nudge the gas I do and easily bump the dock. When it is a bad bump I will let it roll forward then coast back into it again.

I went straight to a company that had autos only. So it did put me at a disadvantage and would recomend standard shifts for learning.
One bonus was being able to really learn more about manuevering the truck without having to worry about shifting.
I think that can be a huge bonus with all the drivers a lot of these companies try to churn out and no doubt has a huge part in many going auto.
Again, I would recomend going with standard shift also but it wasnt the biggest deal when I got back to a standard from the auto. -

As far as wanting to be with a stick....that's cool, but don't sell yourself on thinking automatics are not real trucks.
My favorite transmission used to be the 13 speed, but if I bought a truck today, it would be a auto. -
