Back when I was cranking out my miles in the late 90's I was getting 40 Cpm now remember this is when JB Hunt had just done his Pay increase to 41 and Scheinder was paying Rookies 23 Werner was 22 and Swift and England were at 21. It was nothing for me to NET over a grand a week my father and I when we Teamed up where Splitting 34 and netting over 1 Grand a week. Yes I busted MY ARSE out there for the time I was out there however when my health failed me and I ended up on SSDI I was so freaking glad I did as with what I get it is enough that I can support my family almost. I would love to run like I did back then getting what I would be making now 54 cents a mile hell my wife could be a Stay at home Mother.

 

500 still isn't bad

 

I run 564 miles a night, 5 nights a week on a line haul run. I even spend an hour every night on the dock which I log as on duty. I actually log 1.75 hours every day on duty when you include pre and post trip inspections and swapping trailers and swapping trailers at my turn around terminal.

I punch in at 830 pm (paid hourly) and punch out for the day at 815am every day. That makes it for 56.25 hours on duty (and on my check) each week when you include the required 30 minute breaks I take every day and 2820 miles for the week.

To top it off I do it pulling doubles in a horribly neutered 65 mph truck. With the right loads, keeping the left door closed and a truck that still has its testicals 4000 plus a week is a real possibility. Just because you can't do it op doesn't make all the other drivers liars.

In the late '90s I was running for a covered wagon outfit in central NY. I consistently averaged 13-14,000 per month running 48 states and Canada out of the same 2 mills in Oswego, NY and Kingston, ON.

Fast forward 10 years and I got my own truck and a covered wagon hauling 48 states and Canada out of the same 2 mills. My percentage was 76% which was between $1.80 and $2.25 per mile, plus fuel. This is also after the bottom dropped out of the rates around 05 or 06.

I'd really like to hear how you got the idea that high mileage equals low freight rates

 

I didn't say one equals the other. I said guys that take jobs for sub par pay think they can make up the difference by running harder. You would be the exception to what is par for the course out here.
