I have wanted to go OTR for years now but have never driven a commercial vehicle. After approximately 100 hours of research, I have 2 options that I am trying to decide between.
1) Prime. Biggest pros: .44 after training 3 months with a trainer after obtaining cdl
Cons: mega carrier with around 100 drivers in their last 3 classes. If I cant pass physical or cdl I have to find a way home.
2) R.E. West Biggest pros: paid training, can drive to training center, training group will be 4-6 drivers instead of 100. Cons: the day you get your cdl you are handed keys and a load on your own. also pays .33 instead of .445
My background: I am single, no children, dont care about home time. No criminal convictions ever, 2 seat belt tickets in last 15 years. never had an accident etc. I already have my 2 year dot physical card and cdl learners permit. Spotty work record last 3 years but I hate changing jobs if I dont have to. I will likely stay for at least a few years with whatever company I go with.
I am 34 years old, 350 lbs. I am concerned about passing primes additional physical (cant touch my toes, 45 bmi). I also have NEVER driven a manual transmission before. Financially, I can survive without a check for 6-8 weeks.
Any knowledge or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I need advise choosing between two companies please.

If you're a big dude and don't want to be home much go with a company that will put you in a full size truck with an APU, fridge.

RE West has driver facing cameras... so that's a no go.
They do a lot of water heater loads where YOU'RE required to offload water heaters and stack them on pallets.
Plus you'll be going to the Baltimore port with a twic escort to get farm tractors loaded onto drop deck trailers.. you'll blow half the day just to get loaded which you don't get paid for.
Those drop deck trailers are 10+ years old and are a piece of trash.
Prime is slow trucks and a mega carrier yes but are known to have a good training program and pay well right off the bat. Plus they have reefer, tanker and flatbed soo you have other options to gain experience in if you want.
That's where I'd go.wise2727 Thanks this. -
Earl Henderson Trucking would be good. They have a guaranteed minimum weekly paycheck of $798.00 and you can make much more. Company has about 400 trucks.
Their classes are small and the company provides a single occupancy hotel room and meals. New trucks arriving with APU's, seats that heat and cool, and other amenities. Starting pay is .38 cpm plus accessorial pays.

OP, whats your location?

If your not hurting for money, it's usually best to get your CDL on your own through a local community college.
Then apply at good companies. If you can't find a good first job, then you apply at a mega as a ditch effort.
After a 100 hours of research, I'm not impressed.123456 Thanks this. -
Is travelling the primary factor?
Depending on your location I would recommend other companies to work for.
Conway or Old Dominion for better pay and home every day, or Power Fuels in Watford City ND for about 3k per week and an opportunity to get better paying jobs as soon as the oil prices go back over $4 per gallon.
without a CDL I would recommend
Weatherford
Schlumberger
Halliburton
Baker Hughes
Sanjel
Tervita
many of those companies provide training to get your cdl and pay at least twice what PRIME pays. -
Have you talked to RE West about any additional physical requirements?
I didn't know they have the cameras until just now when "freightwipper" posted it. That sucks, but ask about the additional physical requirements before you write them off. -
