    Hey,

I'm in my 6th week of CDL class A training and will be finishing up in less than two weeks. I still have to pass my test but I've decided to go ahead to start doing some research for the right trucking company to work for.

I live in West Virginia. I want to do over the road so time away from home isn't a huge issue for me. I want to make some money. I realize with no experience I'm not going to make huge money but more money would obviously be a factor. I want to drive a nice truck, I feel like I'm going to be spending so much time in the truck I would like it to be in decent shape. Most of the drivers I've talked to preach about APU's so I would like that as well. Def do not want to do team driving. I'm not saying all the stuff is a necessity just some things I look for.

Only other issue I might run into. I had a driving on suspended in 9/22/2009, but that is more than 5 years ago. Not sure how far back most companies look. License was also suspended from 1/2/13 to 1/7/13 for an unpaid citation. Obviously, this is some stuff I would take back if I could but I just gotta live with it.

    Any recommendations?

I've been out here for 24 years and I still haven't found the "right" company. All companies have their pros and cons. Its up to you to decide what BS you can deal with.

The citation from 09 more then likely won't affect you. The one in 13, maybe, but most "mega" carriers will work with you.

Imo hire on with a mega and get atleast a year experience then you can be more selective on what company you want to stay with.

    G.Anthony and CA-NV-AZ-NM Thank this.

What type of freight do you want to haul? (reefer, van, flatbed).

Van or flatbed is what I'm looking for.

EDIT: I guess reefer would be ok as well. I don't mind tying stuff down or tarping with flatbed stuff but I don't want to be unloading tons of boxes of frozen food all day.

Parts of WV are dead zones for hiring areas.
Which town do you live in or close to?
Howard Transportation (flatbed) has a terminal in WV and hires new CDL grads.

    H.O. Wolding - dry van
    Dartco - dry van
    Total Transportation - dry van
Abilene Motor Express - dry van & reefers
    Pride Transport - reefers & 100% no-touch freight
    USA Truck - dry van
Waggoners Trucking Co. - flatbed & .50 cpm

There's more if you're in the hiring area so let us know the nearest town.

I live right outside of Morgantown, which is about an hour and a half south of Pittsburgh.

Those I listed will probably work for Morgantown area.

Earl Henderson Trucking hires in that area; it's reefer and new trucks arriving with APU's.
Melton Truck Lines - flatbed & APU's. Driver facing cameras in the trucks though.
Pride Transport also has a flatbed division. Even the reefer drivers that post on here like the company and fancy trucks with refrigerators.

If you have problems due to the license suspension then Western Express might give you a second chance. At least can get flatbed experience there.

Paschall Truck Lines might work with you on the license suspension; dry van and trucks have APU's.

YOU SHOULD LOOK AT MAVERICK IF YOUR LOOKING TO DO FLATBED. THEY HAVE A GREAT TRAINING PROGRAM, GOOD EQUIPMENT. DONT TELL PEOPLE THAT YOU KNOW THE PAY WONT BE GOOD BECAUSE YOUR NEW, ALWAYS SHOOT FOR MORE THEN WHAT THE OFFER. DONT TELL THEM YOU DONT CARE WHEN YOU GET HOME. IF THERES SOMETHING NOT RIGHT WITH ANYTHING ON THE TRUCK, DEMAND THEY FIX IT NOW, EVEN IF ITS JUST A LIGHT. REMEMBER YOUR THE ONE DRIVING THE TRUCK, NOT YOUR SOON TO BE FLEET MANGER. GOOD LUCK
