I think it would be possible... :yes2557:

I scaled that load 3 times... the one you referred to was the first time... Went back to shipper and they moved some of the weight to the front and when I scaled the second time I got this

    11320 steer
    33880 drive
    34540 trailer
    79740 total

and after I moved the pin one hole to the back I got this...

    11360 steer
    34260 drive
    34160 drive
    79780 total

BTW, I forgot one detail... my 5th wheel is all the way to the back... that's what Mr. maintenance wants it to be...

It makes the steer really light and gives me more distance between the tractor and the trailer... truck becomes just a little bit longer than I would like... :biggrin_2552:

So... if I had slid the tandems one more hole to the back and then moved the fifth wheel to the front, I would have been able to make it legal... BTW, on the tandems, each hole in this case was 380 lbs... I believe the 5th wheel is about 100 lbs per notch...

There's a couple of Pilot's down on exit 100. New one is a joke. The older one was Gooseberry farms. Fuel islands are just sad but the older one has some good parking spaces up top near the truck wash. Close to the building was a cluster. Independent diner was still open and busy with locals last fall.

That raceway or racetrack or whatever it's called is a good stop too. Has the Burger King .

Raceway Travel Plaza, exit 104. Thats where I ended up the night I unloaded at Wegmans. $8 for a shower and for an indie stop it was pretty decent.

Hey Mr. Pack... today I made my notes... as I drove by those picnic areas and took pictures of some...
This is a small parking area I had seen on satellite but thought it would be too close to the road.. but very nice view of the Pecos River down there... :biggrin_25519:

I'll transfer my notes to my truck stop guide and will draw little maps so I know where they are for next time...

Drove all my hrs today... And as I suspected, the rest area where I planned to park in AZ is closed... Too bad I didn't double check yesterday... :biggrin_25510: And ended up having to stop at the ramp of the rest area (entering the highway), and showed a Post Trip and used Personal conveyance to get to parking place... I hate when that happens...
    Now parked here...

Hopefully will not have a row of trucks obstructing me when I need to leave tomorrow morning..

And will have to stop at closest TA to change a trailer tire... Found this during Post trip this evening...:biggrin_25510:

Called Mr. maintenance and told him... He said, get a new recap... I better get this taken care of right away... Don't want a tire blow out on my way to Calif... :biggrin_25512:

I wasn't reading carefully enough and reversed myself after @FatDaddy pointed it out. No matter what, you had 400 lbs with nowhere to go, given the 5th wheel issue. I have the opposite problem. 5th wheel all the way back and the steer is always heavy anyway. 300 gals of fuel and yellow paint under the hood. Also, after seeing your pics, your 5th wheel pivot is slightly rear of center over the tandem where it is, and probably makes for a more loose steer feel when the drive weight is higher.

On the other hand, my son who is the Freightliner pilot, complains if he has to slide the 5th wheel up to put weight on the steer. Says it makes the handling and ride worse that way. I just thought they handled badly by design.

If you want to try selling Mr. Maintenance on adjusting the 5th wheel, suggest that you could get better mpg by sliding it up and closing the trailer gap to reduce aerodynamic drag.

Not sure... he doesn't want the steer to get too heavy... that's what he said...
Fuel tanks are right under sleeper and we also carry an APU, which increases the weight... But we could have that 5th wheel a little more forward and still be legal... :biggrin_25519:
In any case... I know now that other drivers in my company have moved their 5th wheel back and forth... Don't know why Mr. maintenance didn't want me to "mess" with it the first time I asked, about 2 yrs ago...
Will bring this to one of the dispatchers attention and will have this issue solved once for all...
It bothers me what happened and I don't want it to happen again...

Rocks, If that 5th wheel has not moved in 2 years you may need the shop to help you get it unstuck.

That's where I was going to suggest. It's not huge but it also seems to be an unknown spot to the megas. I pulled in there late one night and found a couple open spots

Getting ready for night duty again but loading some protein in first and lots of coffee. Dropping up in Amana, IA then grabbing a preload and getting as far as possible toward Tulsa where I have an 0800 for Monday.
