for the complete truck, if its running why would it not work? I have several old school buddys who have Detroit powered setups. cabover kev runs his all day every day.

has a 36" sleeper looks to be a 8,9 or 10 speed trans and 4spring rear suspension.

Well, flc, you do what you want. It sounds like a poorly spec'd out truck, by someone in 1979 that refused to change with the times. Old Detroit motor, 10 speed, spring suspension (good heavens, perhaps you've forgotten what a spring suspension truck rides like), certainly nothing I would run down the road.

For that price my pecker got hard, so I'm all for this.

If you're going to start it, do like was mentioned above and make sure the rack isn't seized. Also pull your intake pipe off the air filter side of the turbo and be ready with a sturdy piece of clean wood in case she runs away.
lots of character Thanks this. -

I ran a spring ride truck, and an air ride truck with a longer wheelbase(but still a coffin sleeper) when I first started, and there was a difference but they both rode rough. We did have some newer lease trucks later set up with full lockers on springs, and those weren't bad(I never drove one but I trust that the experienced driver knew what he was talking about). I would have liked doing livehaul in the winter with full lockers
As for what these engine were capable of, I trust the guy that ran a bunch of them, starting with a 6v53 in a tag axle with a 2500 gallon tank hauling milk, and also some friends I knew, the 8v92 TT and TA rated at 475 horsepower were good performers, and having run a few myself, they didn't wind that hard.
Now there are newer and better things, and the guy that had all of the 2 strokes over a long period ended up with all 60 Series before he retired, except one Cat he bought for the Cat man who later bought him out. There were mechanical issues where coolant got in the oil, but he still said the best runner he had was the 475 in a mid to late eighties Freightliner tandem with a big Walker milk tank. His first Series 60 was an early 450.
His lament was the fuel saved over the 2 strokes (or the Cummins in the Autocar) made the payments on the 60 Series equipped trucks. His odd truck was a really pretty red Mack, which didn't stay long because of a light steering axle, all of his specced trucks had 20 k or better with the tires to go with them. He really must have liked that Mack to have bought it that way..
I'm not sure what Cat man is buying now, but Caledonia Haulers is buying Paccar MX. They had all lightweight Cats while they could buy them new.
