no, your not connected to the internet. so to speaks. however, you do need internet for it work.

same with my printer. if i have no internet, i can't wireless print from my laptop. or tablet.

basically, the mobile hotspot acts as a wifi router for devices but requires a internet signal. otherwise, it won't turn on.

unless apple products are specifically geared to only work with apple products. i don't see why you couldn't use just any wireless internet router.

i don't know, as i own nothing apple. i don't see the need to spend more money then necessary when there's other things that do the same thing as apple. and are cheaper.

i don't buy nike shoes when walmart shoes last me just as long.

now that i think about it. i wonder if a home wireless router would work for a network without an internet signal.

such as basic wireless printing. or streaming from computer to tv.

Oh it would work with any wifi router and would not need to be an Apple router. Just sometimes you get what you pay for. And like so many things Apple, users appreciate the details and feel they are getting their money's worth from the product.

The Apple router in question is like a small 3x3 (or less) white box that stands less than an inch high so it's the perfect size for small environments.

I can unplug the net from mine in the morning and confirm but I think it should work. Just creating a local network like we use to do in our offices before we added Internet. Now those were wired LANs and not wifi but the LAN aspect should work normally. Everything on the LAN should talk to each other but not to anything beyond that local environment.

So a printer should work as it's just a simple communication between devices but anything requiring data from the net would be hampered.

Will verify in the morning and post results.
