I have a question. I am constantly having connection problems. Internet explorer says it can't connect. Got a new wireless router and turned off firewall (norton). It still does it, but not as much. The computer keeps telling me to turn off LAN and turn it back on. Could it be the computer since I'm pretty sure it's not the router. (new one). It's an HP Laptop. The windstream company told me to uninstall norton, but I'm afraid to unistall something I shouldn't.

I don't know what AVG 8 is. I'm assuming, you have a extra bar in your internet explorer with this program? Clearing your history is simple to do.

There are several ways to get to internet options. You can right click on IE and scroll down to properties is one way. Another is by going to start, then settings and then opening control panel. Choosing internet options. For this question, we will access it thru Internet Explorer.

In internet explorer, in the toolbar.
choose tools,,,,,drop down to internet options,,,,click on that and page should open.
First page is general tab,,,,,,second category down is browsing history
Select delete,,,,,another window will open and give you the option to delete all or some of your history.

Now the second part of your question, I believe is. You have this toolbar embedded in your IE at the top?
You can remove that bar in Internet options also. Then go to Programs tab.
At the bottom you will see a button, manage add-ons,,,click that and another window will open.
At the top of this page, you will see a window that says SHOW. Pick the one that says ADD-ons currently loaded in Internet explorer. It will refresh it self with current data. Then you should see the program or bar that you are referring to. This is where you disable the program. then hit OK
backing your way out of Internet Options. Then hit Apply, then OK

That will remove the toolbar from your Internet Explorer with out removing the program totally from your system. I hope this helps you. I tried to answer your question with out more input. Feel free to ask anymore questions you have.

I have two questions for you. What OS are you using? OS is operating system, like vista, xp, 98? Did you turn windows firewall off? Windows firewall might be interfering with your routers connection. OK, maybe three questions. Did the wireless router come with instructions and did you read/follow what it said to do?

You said this is wireless? Did you make it secure? if not, there are several other possibilities here what could be causing your problem.

o.k. first answer is windows vista, second one, how do I turn windows firewall off? I know that sounds sad, but my computer guy is on the truck with his dad. Third- my son installed the wireless router and he did follow directions, but I'm not sure the router is the problem because the first router did it too. o.k. I just checked and windows firewall is turned off.

I've seen Norton cause connection issus with wireless and aircard connections. There ARE better solutions out there, and they're free.

Go to http://free.grisoft.com and download the free version of AVG.. (Rookietrucker, AVG 8 is from Grisoft). Uninstall Norton... Install AVG, make sure you update the software and virus definitions, and I think you'll see a huge performance increase on your notebook AND a more stable connection.

Don't forget to suggest that if he is adventurous, he can usually find a used (or even NEW) keyboard on EBay and install it himself.

I would suggest to everyone using IE (internet explorer) to get a new web browser as fast as you can (i.e. mozilla, firefox, safari). IE opens your computer to a whole slew of nasty programs. I'd also get a got anti-malware program. Ad-Aware by Lavasoft is a great, free program.

You might also want to check and see what other programs on your computer are trying to access the internet. When you are working with limited bandwidth, it doesn't help your cause if background programs are chewing it all up while you are trying to ckeck e-mail, browse or whatever.
Get decent RAM for your computer, especially if you run Vista. Vista is a memory HOG! Get at least 2 gigs to avoid the urge to throw your computer out the window.:biggrin_25525:
