Where are your truck maintenance costs.......?
Don't see how you can make $$$$$ at those rates. But let us know how it's going in a few years..... -
might as well be a company driver, and you forgot maintenance

UPS does not have a 0.60 discount at the pump at best they get 0.20-0.25 with a few getting 0.30 at select TA's . UPS discounts are mainly TA and Petro combined with some Wilco / Hess stations
they get discounts at Pilot and Loves also but it's around 0.05-0.10 normally .
The Fuel Surg last week was 0.4284 the reason I know is I still get emails from them weekly showing this see the copy and paste below I took out pertinent information but it's as of last week . I been there tried it didn't like it different strokes for different folks .
Copy paste below :
The average price of fuel this week is $3.879/gallon. The FSC that we are paying this week is $0.4284/mile.
UPS Freight
Supplemental Transportation
hope this helps -
Pros / Cons
pros :
quick pay
almost hub miles bout 2% off or less
fuel network
95% drop hook
light loads normally 15-30k
cons :
1.loads don't come out till 13:00 to 16:00 or later
2.lots of night driving ( May be a pro for some )
3. Lots of waiting for loads to complete
4. Bad trailers ( you don't pull UPS Equip you pull mainly rail trailers ) you know the ones that look brown from dirt and never washed and look 150 yrs old those are what you pull. The DOT loves those trailers cause 9 times out of 10 something's wrong with them and under CSA it's still your fault. The shops mostly refuse to work on those trailers cause they are leased from some rental place and not UPS equipment although once in a while you'll get the UPS shop to change a light or something easy .
5. No detention or break down pay for sitting with the trailers if you were to encounter problems and you will. .
6. Empties are hard to find so let's say you get a dispatch to take an empty from a terminal and there are none . Then you wait till one is aval . Now as you know union workers take their time and 100 breaks so maybe you'll get one by the shift end in 3-4 hrs or so while they cross dock freight and load trailers for UPS company drivers and you wait for free . Burning day light
7. UPS employees are rude to owner operators cause they see you as competition and taking their freight from them , cause you do it for less money and hurt their ability to negotiate their next contract cause UPS can haul it for less using you the contractor
8. They do pay lay over after 24hrs hanging out at a terminal etc . But not detention
9. 0.90 a mile and 0.92 after 1 yr
10. Dispatchers will not answer the phones they call you when they got your load and you just sit on stand by until they contact you via phone or email . ( some May like that but to me it's a con )
To their credit I will say I heard that they bought some old MS Carriers Trailers ( if that's good ) which will be a upgrade to the old rail boxes . I got no ax to grind with UPS and left on good terms but for what that pay I think you can do a little better as a O/O .Blue4ever, LucyGoose and Captbob412 Thank this. -
My information on my Pro / Con list is about 18 months old . But I think the pay structure is around the same as I posted . The Fuel Surg number I posted is current as of last Monday .
I hope ops the information I posted helped , the people on the UPS Suplemental side ( owner opps ) management are good people and the dispatchers were ok to speak to if you ever can . But they are not hateful at all .
Tge he hateful people I spoke of are at the individual terminals both drivers ( company ) and management cause your seen as a threat to them and their job security so they tend to play games such as get load out late , delay you etc . To try to get you frustrated so they can turn you in for being hateful etc . It's just a game they play
I left ups cause I'm just not a night owl and hate sitting and waiting while I'm looking at the trailer I'm going to take but can't cause of cut off times etc . Then I also compared the money and it's just substandard to what a owener operator should be getting to do this type of work or run a businessCaptbob412, Lone Ranger 13 and Cetane+ Thank this. -
It's been a couple of years since anyone has posted on this thread. Thought I'd ask how it's going for those of you that contracted with UPS Freight. Looks like they've raised their pay since the last post on this thread. It's at $1.02/mile plus fuel surcharge. If the total of the 2 comes out to $1.28/mile, doing 3000 miles per week comes to $3840. If you pay $1000/week for fuel, $500/week truck payment, and $200/week for insurance, you're left with $2140/week. Doesn't sound too bad to me. Am I missing something?
Forgot to mention taxes. At 28% of $2140, you're looking at another $600/week. So if you set aside $500/week for truck maintenance, repairs, etc., you can still pay yourself $1000/week.Last edited: Oct 25, 2015
