This study, http://www.dat.com/Resources/~/medi...apers/2013_Carrier_BenchMark_Surveyfinal.ashx,
indicates that average revenue per mile for owner operators with their own authority (I presume) was as follows:
2010: $1.75
2011: $2.10
2012: $1.95
These numbers are dated, and I'm trying to get a sense for the current average revenue per mile for owner operators with their own authority. If you don't know of real study, does $2.00 resonate as an average, or is it too high?
Thnks,

$2/mi is about spot on for me. Some runs more...ashamed to admit it but I have run a few this year for less.
Flipflops and lots of character Thank this. -
Is that every mile the truck turns? Or just loaded miles? -

If you dont have direct customers and running only brokered freight, you will be making less than in 2010 right now
Big_D409 and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
2011-$102,248 gross-total miles 43,310-$2.36/mile gross
2012-$108,778 gross-total miles 41,534-$2.62/mile gross
2013-$130,941 gross-total miles 49,693-$2.64/mile gross
2014-$175,997 gross-total miles 61,799-$2.85/mile gross
Right now we're on pace with '14. Those are all miles, as I don't distinguish between loaded or empty bc of my situation. Most of my customers are in Phx and their product is in LA. Probably 50% of the time I am going to LA empty to pick up my loads.
If I only calculated my loaded miles, it would really be skewed and not include the fact that I have to get to LA to get the majority of my product.
The jump in revenue from '13 to '14 can be attributed to raising my rates for not so regular customers and also the fact that Dignity Health purchased 4 local hospitals in the Phx metro area.
Just so happens they decided to replace all copiers and printers with new machines supplied by a co. that I haul for out of Irvine.
Lots of machines going back & forth.
It's nice to be in the right place at the right time. Some skill involved, but you cannot count out the luck factor.Terry270, trapt, Milkman719 and 6 others Thank this. -
My ultimate question is whether it is likely for a new O/O and some ambition and willingness to hustle to run about 100K miles average $2 a mile. I know, I know, it depends on this, that and the other thing, etc. etc. Of course it does. My question is how many of you guys are doing it? Can you get these loads for 100K miles if you work hard looking for them? -

My customers dictate how many miles I run by how much product they order.
I've added a customer or 2 every year so that is the reason for the increase in mileage.
This week will by my 53rd trip to LA and I think I've made 3 to Las Vegas.
I would rather increase my revenue by hauling higher value merch. than driving more miles-not a big fan of driving more.Ruthless, trapt, Pintlehook and 3 others Thank this. -
