Garmin GPS question

Don't buy either one...Rand 7" blows both of the Garmins away. I've had the Garmin 760 & 770..and the 5" models a few years back.The 760 worked far better than the 770...and I think you can still pick one up(New) for $250 now. The 7" screen is really nice.... I have always been a Garmin guy...but...I switched about 3 months after I bought the Garmin 770 to the Rand 7". As usual...if you follow a GPS...you'll end up either in a corn field or a residential neighborhood looking for your address...? About the the only thing I use it for... is lanes...and planning routes...not right to the door. Good Luck !

 

When its not rebooting or freezing up. Or taking 20 mins to recalculate a 1000 mi route after you missed an exit. Thats always fun. They need a better processor in them and they would be a bit more reliable in my opinion. Google the Rand models and many people are upset with them. Not just me.

Less issues with the Garmin and it calculate long routes much faster. As for routing and other typical GPS functions,.. I believe its just a matter of personal preference as they both route nearly identical and do what they were designed to do. But like anything else,.. they are not infallible and if you miss a turn or exit, they are prone to wanting you to turn down streets or areas that you know there is no way you will pass with out some battle scars or damaging property. You have to use common sense with a GPS.

As for the OP,.. I dont have the newer models. There are plenty of write ups comparing the 2 models. Thinking of buying the 570 for myself this Christmas. I like the glass screen vs the plastic screen on the 560 I have now.

Not sure on the newer ones,.. but on the older models the 7" showed mile markers and had a few different screen options that the 560 did not.

Personally I prefer the smaller screen,.. less of a distraction than something that large. I use it mainly for last mile routing,.. or to aid finding different points of interest. Though I am using google maps on my phone more and more for the points of interest.
The Garmin will alert you to height and weight restrictions even when not on the direct route it chooses. I often ignore its route preferring to use my own and allow it to just recalculate unless she has made up her mind that she is right and I am wrong by constantly getting me to turn at each street or intersection,.. at which point I just turn it off.


The one annoying feature on the 560 is that you can not disable the lane assist. I am not sure if they added this feature to the new models. Pretty lame if they didnt. It throws up a large window showing you what the lane or intersection looks like with an image. Blocking much of the map,.. very bothersome to me.

Garmin hands down. 500,000 miles on my 560 dezl without a hiccup. Now the only difference is size. Those 7" screens are way big. 5" is all you need for a GPS. Don't buy into the Rand hype. They're junk.

 

My wife says bigger is better.

i use copilot on a samsung note 2 phone. that's a big enough screen for me.

when it's night, i like the inside of my truck to be DARK. not have my face lit up so the cops can see me.

 

I've used the smaller 5 inch screens then moved to the 7 inch screen and the increased size is definitely worth it. Much easier to "tap" and navigate the screen, easier to see when it's not real close to driver eye position and it's not overly "big" and does not block any critical view areas. But full disclosure: I use "north up always" option and this may be part of why I prefer the larger screen. No fan of the "3d view", no matter the screen size or the model or the manufacturer.

I'll do without before reverting back to a 5 inch screen in a big truck again.

 

I have used both Garmin and RM products.

My choice is the Garmin Dezl line.
Having 560 and now 770 units, I have to say the 770 is a vert good unit. I too at first thought the larger screen was going to be a problem. The first few days it took to get used to it, find the best location for it. Now it seems like normal.

The larger screen is easy to read at a quick glance, seems to have a better readability in strong sun light, also less glare at night. Not sure if that's due to the HD display or size.

While the voice command is good and works well, some of the features I just don't use. Bluetooth being one of them.

The IFTA app is a great tool. I use this a lot. I note that using the HOS app seems to improve the tracking. Also gives you suggestions for break and end of day parking locations.

I have also put a Zagg brand screen protector on it.
Get the IPad mini one and trim to fit. Compared to other brands, it seems to not have any interference with the touch screen operation.

While you can't turn off the lane guidance, a quick touch on the pop up screen will close it and show the whole map screen again.
