Hi truckers.
Is been a few months that i got my CDL and driving for a friend of mine and now I'm getting ready on purchasing my first truck. I have been interested on a 07 Freight liner Columbia, with a cat c13. The truck has 226k and the engine has 120k. I have been told that the original engine went bad and was replaced by cat 6 months ago and is still under warranty. I did some research on the c13 and I'm getting mixed reviews, that's why i decided to make a new thread. Am I looking at a great buy or am I opening a can of worms with this truck. Thanks in advance on any info.
Your opinion on my first truck

What's that truck been doing the last 8 years?Wiley.Coyote and Bob Dobalina Thank this.

Good question.
Otherwise, it doesn't sound too bad if it's not tore up from local work.Wiley.Coyote Thanks this. -
You need to make sure that mileage is correct. Could possibly be 1,226,000...... Would make more sense that they replaced the engine at 1.1 million instead of 100,000.

Have seller show you the written warr. on the replacement eng. before you down load the full ECM. from truck you want to buy?
blairandgretchen and Wiley.Coyote Thank this. -
According to the paper work the mileage was at 226k also shown in the cluster, I have been stressing a lot on this subject because I'm afraid of getting a money pit, but you guys been asking some good questions that i have no answers to, looks like it would be safer to pass on this deal, I appreciate your help.

How much?
The Columbia's were the epitome of "Freightshaker" (not as bad as the Century class though). I drove 4 different ones in 2 companies. Something was always falling off or breaking itself.
Also, there's a reason you don't see CAT engines in trucks today. If they couldn't even engineer an emissions system, their engines were broken to begin with.poppapump1332 Thanks this. -
They were asking $30k, the truck looked well kept but i read too many horror stories on the cat engines ( main bearing failure as low as 130k ) i think i will keep looking for another freight liner probably cummins or Detroit diesel, looking for a cheap workhorse nothing crazy.
blairandgretchen and Wiley.Coyote Thank this. -
Stick with Cummins and Detroit. They are the most common engines today and parts are cheaper and more readily available. Freightliner is a good brand for a workhorse because of parts as well. Avoid Internationals, but KW and Pete are fine as well. Volvos are nice, but their engines and transmissions can get costly.
Wiley.Coyote, rabbiporkchop and KenX Thank this.
