I will always watch someone that helps me back, but I also watch my mirrors and look at the front and both sides while I am backing. I tag something and it is on me not the guy who will walk away if I hit something...

Not really. I had a guy helping me in a tight dock in Syracuse years ago. He only watched. When the front got close to the wall, he never said anything. He just let the bumper hit. He thought I was watching the front, he was watching the rear. He had it backwards.AfterShock Thanks this. -
Shockey, once again thank you for a very informative post! You always say things that I (and probably others) need to hear.
A lot of people think my hubby and I are nuts, asking questions and looking at different companies, and talking to drivers when we are 2-3 years out from getting our CDL's (gotta wait on the munchkin to graduate), but we try not to make hasty decisions. My hubby will research something to death before he makes a decision (case in point...I needed a new vacuum cleaner....it took almost a year of reading reviews and looking at different ones to get one), so you see when we decide what we are going to do about school (training company or the local community college or a local truck driving school) and which company we want to apply to, we will know more than the average Joe.
Neither one of us is a spring chicken, and we have both had long careers doing something else, so this is going to be a big change for us and a fun time to work together as the team we are. Neither one of us wants to job hop. We are looking for a company to stay with and after raising 4 kids, we are more patient in our old age than when we are younger. It's kinda funny how the older you get the more bovine excrement you can tolerate! I guess with time you realize what is worth the worry or the fight and what isn't. I no longer sweat the small stuff. All I can do is my best...if I do that, then everything else is ok. You can't get anymore out of me than that!AfterShock and panhandlepat Thank this. -
Don't let other folks fool you!
You're doing the RIGHT thing the RIGHT way.
If only others would follow your lead.
I may have mentioned this before, but I think Schneider would like to talk to you and your lucky hubby.
I know they like more mature drivers, and a hubby/wife team with maturity is right up their alley.
Keep up the research and keep posting. Your comments and observations are valuable to others as well, and MUCH appreciated.

I'm just hangin' around too.... for now..... so you aren't alone

-
yeah, but you are just waiting for me to show up and sweep you off your feet. Different thing alltogether.
Shock - yeah, that was one of the thoughts that didn't appeal to me. Permanent road trip.
Found another driver (different company, same kinda gig). Says he spent 3 days parked on the street in NYC - not because he didn't have a hotel room - but because he feared for the truck's security.
Hasn't been home in 8 months.
Eats like a king
(other cities were not nearly as bad as NYC - but that's still a problem)
They expect him to get the truck from point A to point B on time. HOS don't matter to them. (I took this with salt)
Seems to me, too, that if the venue is a multi-day gig, you should be able to grab a cab to the nearest airstrip and boogie home for a day or so.
as for arenas and the like - yeah. Not tried to put a rig in there, but have been in the back of beyond in some of them. Would not like getting a rig in there - and back out. -
Boy....... you wouldn't be able to handle me!!
-
Lady, you have no clue what I can handle. I could tell you some stories... and nobody would believe me, since it was in the days before video cameras

Hi all. Just readin some of your posts and I am finding that one minute I am gungho about driving a truck( the hard work, the weather, the diffrent views in each state, the openess, the seasons, the money) then I have a panic attack because even though I have my permit I've never been in a big rig. I believe I could handle it but ya know there is that "unknown" factor that scares the bejeebers out of me. Then theres the fact that hubby and I were going to go team together for schneider even sent in all our paperwork but when it came time to set date for orientation, had a think. He would have to leave a job with benefits (we still have two in college, so we need the medical for them.)without knowing for sure we had a job until after orientation. If that happened (not hired) we would both be up the creek without a paddle also even if we were hired as a team (my dream) there would be the 90 days of working until you could get med benefits plus the 2 week orientation. So we've shelfed the team for the time being. My question from all of this (this is where i need some input from you guys and gals)is should I go ahead to orientation as a single tank driver for them and after the waiting period to get med for whole family then have my husband come onto the company and then have them switch us to team drivers? Is this possible? Also I am a nice person who is tough, we own some land and I work right beside my husband bringing in wood, splitting it on a 3pt on back of tractor and loading it into truck, & stacking it for our furnace this winter. So physically I'm good, mentally? I'm not so sure. I am used to people being nice to me,cause I'm nice to them. Should I be concerned about there being really not nice people out there? Not afraid of them (I have teenagers)just don't like to be around them. Sorry this post so long. Was reading baseballs post and thought what the heck, I won't know what ya'll think if I don't try. Thanks for any pointers.
AfterShock and panhandlepat Thank this.
