Look at everything they have to offer. Usually there is also a HMO or something similar. Look at everything, compare everything, and decide based on your personal circumstances. For us, we have used the HMO due to having the family. This year the HMO is gone, but a Banner Health plan is now available. Very similar, but a little more restricting, with all prescriptions having to come from WM or Sams, and all doctors having to be Banner. The big plus is it is 33% less expensive than what we have been paying, so that extra money is going into the 401K.
As for the excitement, I still remember it like it was yesterday. Rick calling me every night and updating me on what was going on. His excitement was so contagious that it made me excited just listening to him. He had worked so long and so hard................. and kept himself so clean, that he really deserved this............... just like all of you do. This is a reward for your hard work and tenacity. As my husband said so many times while going through the process (which used to be quite a bit longer than it is today), "it is our turn."
It is your turn. It is time to be employed by someplace that really respects who you are, and the set of expertise that you bring to this profession. It is your turn to be treated as the professional that you are, with respect, and not as an idiot driver. It is your turn to love your job and know that all of your hard work is finally appreciated.
It is your turn.![]()

I tell people who ask me about Walmart this all the time - as good as you think it's is from the outside, it's waaayyyy better once you get hired!!!! If you notice throughout the thread, almost none of the new guys going through orientation talk about money. They ALL talk about the atmosphere, how well they're being treated, etc. This is the major difference about the private fleet. We all know this, if you're treated well, you WANT to come to work. You WANT to do a good job. And because you're well compensated, a lot of the home problems that we sometimes drag to work aren't there.
You'll find out that the longer you're here, the better it gets. It's still driving a truck, and no job is perfect, but you'll find yourself thinking, "wow, I can't believe it can be this good"!!!! -
While I wait on what seems like years for my background to be complete, all of what you said really proved to be true on my first visit to a DC. Even the warehouse help that was going outside for their breaks seemed happy.

Start my Orientation Nov 30th. I applied back in 2009 after I had the minimum time. I only applied and hoped my home DC would pop up. Every year I re-applied and hoped I'd get the email alert telling me my DC was hiring. I knew turn over was real low and I could be retired by time I got the email. Glad I kept it up. Come the 30th I'll let you know as much as possible as long as it isn't considered confidential to WM. It's one heck of a pay cut compared to LandStar but the benefits and much more I'm looking forward too. Anywho, I have a driver for my trucks and not to worried at all. My biggest fear, being told when where and what to do again. I'm sure it'll be worth it. Like this thread has stated many times.
noninetofive and Joeyd Thank this. -
gregsmith7467 Thanks this.
