Normally what happens is that one register is open and a long line forms then the second cashier opens the other register and the people in line just start taking turns going to the open register.

Everyone is probably having a bad day,and behind schedule.
I always let others go before me,maybe helping them out.

What you witnessed is known as the "herd mentality."
People followed the leader and assumed there was a problem in the short line so they blindly followed others and stood in the long line thinking, "If I ask why everyone is standing in the long line they will think I'm dumb, so I'll just join them so I won't look stupid."

Since it was was a just a candy bar I would have let it pass but you looking like Steven Segal wouldn't have stopped me from saying anything if you had two candy bars.
