If your dead set on best mpg and don't care about being first to the top of the hill so to speak, then it's a no brainer .
    12.7 all the way.

Back in 99-00 in the test fleet in a 00 Century condo that never slowed down below 75 much in the states that allowed it the 14 I had looking back at old trip sheets I turned in was getting around 8.5-10 MPG. How many drivers would kill for that kind of MPG today with the Emissions BS that was forced on the Industry at those speeds.

I heard that the Pete 372 was getting around 10 MPG with a mechanical Cat engine. Imagine what that truck could get with a 12.7L Series 60?

Partial to the 14L myself...also they have a different bull gear setup (heard it described as compact gear train), and aren't as susceptible to the bull gear issues of the 12.7 Not personal experience, just overheard. There are people who can tune them to well and truly stomp, while still getting impressive fuel mileage.

DDEC 4 does not have that gear train.

    Your talking DDEC 5 14L

    Everybody gets confused on this.
Yes they made a pre emmision 14L DDEC4

    JPenn and AModelCat Thank this.

My mistake...I did not realize it was DDEC 5. The person I was talking to was contrasting 12.7 and 14L, and I thought that was the difference.

I was aware of the pre-emission 14L, just didn't realize the DDEC incremented with the addition of EGR.

Yes as soon as they went to ddec 5 in came all the emmision crap.
Funny thou when anybody talks about 14L detroits it's usually the newer ones ddec5 or 6.
Alot of people don't even know about detroits best kept secret the ddec4 14L.
Only made them for a short while

I used to work with a guy who lives out near where they do all the truck rodeos in Quebec. He built a few engines for competition use and I remember him telling me that the pre-egr 14L was an absolute beast when built for performance. He also told me they'd outlast a CAT at those power levels but I think he was just trying to wind me up.

I saw a very obviously non-EGR-equipped 14L on a blender (oilfield equipment), with a dataplate that said it was rated at 635 hp/2250 tq @ 2100 rpm. Would love to have more info on the hard parts in that one... Schlumberger equipment, if any frac hands want to run out and have a peek at one...

The 14L was only a $2500 upgrade over the 12.7 when I ordered my glider
