I have a dome satellite antenna, gets hd and standard from 3 differen satellites and is all automatic, after 2 years it still works great but I wonder how long it will last. I bought the receiver so it only adds $7 a mo to my Dish bill. Antenna was about $500.
TV antenna. Any experience or thoughts?

^^^^. Yep, you can buy a receiver. Dirt cheap.
I had no problem packing around a satellite dish. Back in 02. It was mounted on a fence pole. with a slightly smaller pole fitting inside. The truck had those loadlock bracket locks. Whatever they're called. All i had to do was extend the pole and signal in the dish. Sometimes not the easiest task.
Using whatever you may be using for a hotspot. You can stream your phone or tablet to tv using either a chromecast $40 or roku $60. Doesn't use the internet. The hotspot also acts as a wifi router. And if you have chromecast, you can also stream your laptop using the chrome browser and chromecast extension installed in browser.
Chromecast is nothing but a streaming stick. You need a android device with app installed or computer to stream to it. Apps are limited numbers. The stick itself contains no movie apps.
Roku has over 1500 movie apps. Including netflix and what not. Requires a app on the device to stream. Have yet to make my computer stream to it.
If you have a way to stream movies or whatever your watching. You can stream to your tv using either device. No need for special services or fees or whatever.
Last night, i rented hunger games mocking jay part 1. Through google play. It downloaded to my phone. 820 megs. And i streamed it to my tv. Using my google chromecast. Tomorrow i'm going to the theater for part 2.
Just found out that Google Play is a new channel added to the roku line up. Not too long ago.Last edited: Nov 26, 2015

We put our satellite dish on the window.

Thanks for the idea, don't my if I steal it right...TruckDuo Thanks this. -
Worth a shot, it use to work for us.
Also, maybe consider adding an Apple TV to the mix... There will be many Apps coming to it over the next weeks/month that might make that an option for streaming context as well.
As to the OP, I too used the flat "leaf" models, not sure what it was but I bought mine from Sam's Club, and it worked really well in South Florida. If my truck option doesn't work then I will be searching for the old antenna again. -

How did you mount the 5vdishes you had?

I used to use something like one of these http://www.roadtrucker.com/lcd-tv-antennas/mirrow-wing-tv-antennas.htm
on the truck years ago. I had it mounted on a 10' stick of 1/2" EMT that was mounted to the back of the truck with a couple of clamps like these, spaced a couple feet apart. I think I attached it to a vertical handrail.
I put wing nuts on 'em so I could raise/lower the antenna when I stopped. It worked great, even a few miles out of town. -
I have a subscription to Oyster for e-books and a subscription to Audible for audio-books. I haven't owned a TV, in my truck or my home, in over 5 years. I don't feel like I'm missing anything, in fact I feel that I'm a more well-rounded and better informed person by spending my leisure time reading instead of suckling the cathode ray nipple.
