I can tell you it is a requirement up here. Wrapping excess chain + bungeeing is what I do as well, no problems.

The big mining companies like BHP won't let us use snap binders because they say they are too dangerous. But the ratchet type are a lot slower to use, right now I'm hauling loads of steel which need 16 chains and binders for 2 trailers and they have to be ratchets.

Don't quote me on this, but when I was doing flatbed I am pretty sure things like bungees and wrapping excess chain around snap binders is not legal... Although I do see guys running like this, it could just be that the MOT doesn't bother ticketing for this.. Or I could be completely wrong and it could be a perfectly legal practice.. Worth checking in to.. I haven't been on flatbed in over 10 years... When I was doing flatbed, I had a buddy of mine make me up some brackets a little less time consuming then wrapping chain and bungees.. But a little more equipment to haul around.. They are like a U shape bracket and a locking pin on the open end.. The bracket would go over the binder and the locking pin would go through the hole in the bracket and thru the chain and thru the other hole on other side of bracket... It would great and the MOT was happy.... Actually just found some pictures here...

if you click the link you can go to the webpage and see the picture with it around a snap binder and pinned in.... I can't get the picture URL so you will have to go to the site...

I was doing a 40ft container and I had my big heavy snap binders on both ends and thought I would damage the aluminum braces I had the chains so tight.

I'm not 100% sure how,.. I think due to the flexing or shifting of the trailer on uneven surfaces,.. the rear bind was open and loose when I stopped at a rest area 1 hr down the road. Its a really sick feeling to know you could lose your load. I swapped out the rear with a ratchet binder,.. I did not have room in the front between my step and the front of the container. Thats when I started using bungee to keep help keep the binders closed. I have not had a problem since then.

Like you Chewy,.. I am still learning different things and picking up new ideas as I go along. I am far from being a know it all expert.

I have seen guys use these. Thought about making some from parts I could buy at hardware stores. Some pipe brackets and pin clips.

I am not sure on the legality of using bungee. I have never had DOT say anything about it during an inspection,.. so I just assume that it was acceptable. I do not know the official rule, if there even is one about bungee,.. or if something else must be used.

When I hit the Road this weekend I'll take a picture and show you what I've done and am going to start doing from now on. I think it'll be pretty secure.
