I had to back almost two miles, and blindside 90... Residential street 2am, no driveways, cars all along both sides of street.

I had a hard nose trainer pushing me into these mistakes.

But he was there to bail me out, and you can bet.... It won't happen again.

Just to ground this thread back to reality. OP you did not get fired because of a bad turn or because of the GPS. You got fired because you did not handle the situation correctly and cost your company money. This will go on your DAC and your Swift qualification file. When will people learn that when you find yourself in a hole to throw the shovel away?

Really hard to say, without being there at the same time and place the OP was. You do what you have to do to get out of a situation, safely, without hitting anything/anybody or damaging any equipment. If you can back out, fine. If you need to get help, then GET HELP. Even if it means a call to LE to help you out. But likely you won't have to go that far, as there are an awful lot of people willing to help by guiding you and/or stopping traffic. That being said though, even with a guide, it is the responsibility of the driver to get his rig out safely.

That is if you allow yourself to get sucked into a situation like this in the first place. Let's face it people, crap like this does happen with a new driver. Of course it should never happen, but it does. If it happens a second time, then it is time for the driver to go do something other than drive.

I'm much more concerned about the OP trying to blame SWIFT, and to conceal his screw up. That speaks to dishonesty, immaturity and a general attitude problem that I would not want working for me!

In his defense, when he said Swift we already knew that he couldn't drive

The problem wasn't the turn. It was the U turn

I've done something similar in VERY rural Wisconsin in a snow storm. Thought I was turning onto a state highway, the sign appeared to say so but the turn was down a ways, ended up being someone's really wide and long driveway.... Thankfully it was in the middle of the night and I prayed to God nobody was coming when I backed out onto the big road

It happens to experienced drivers too. I made a wrong turn only to see 50 yards down the road..."NO TRUCKS". Made another turn to get out but what I thought I saw was really a spot too small to turn around and a field too soft to drive in. LE showed up before I could back down the road and just blocked off the road. It was late at night and raining but there was no traffic.

Heck, I don't have a GPS and still made a wrong turn.... LOL But it was all my companies fault.:p
