Whiteout conditions shut down I-80 in Sierra

    Interstate 80 is closed to vehicles because of low visibility, the California Highway Patrol said.

    Motorists are being held at the nearest chain control checkpoints until conditions improve.

    Drivers are not being let through from Kingvale to the Nevada stateline. All eastbound I-80 traffic is being stopped at Applegate. All westbound I-80 traffic is being turned around at the California-Nevada stateline.

    CHP at Truckee listed on its Facebook pageroads in its jurisdiction that were also closed due to low visibility:

    - I-80 closed at Alta to the Nevada stateline.
    - State Route 89 at Emerald bay is closed due to Avalanche hazard.
    - State Route 89 closed at Picketts Junction to Highway 50.
    - Road from Bliss State Park to I-80 closed.
    - Road from Truckee to Plumas County Line closed.
    - Road from Graeagle to Greeneville closed
    - State Route 267 is closed at Kings Beach to Northstar.
    - State Route 28 is closed at Tahoe City to the Nevada stateline.
    - Hwy. 50 is closed from Sand Flat to Meyers.

    A combination of light snow and windy conditions are decreasing visibility at the Sierra summit.

    It is unknown when the roadway will reopen. Caltrans said the highway will reopen when visibility increases.

    Unless you have zero options, why would you take a route in the snow when you can go elsewhere and keep working? Are people afraid to tell dispatch, "f that, I'll b delayed and make no money, give me something else", I never had that problem. Plus I built relationship with dispatch, I got my way.

    yup what walstib said, But sometimes there was a need to travel that way, Glad I'm not OTR anymore, I don't need to deal with weather

    Too many people live in Fantasyland, where there is nothing but rainbows and blue skies. Loads have to go where they go, regardless of weather. Stuff like this is not limited to calforny. I was snowed in for 3 days once in Council Bluffs IA. April 1, 1987. Snow was waist deep. I suppose I should have rejected the load from NJ to SLC

    I hindsight knowing it cost you 3 days, yes! And you can avoid most of that bad weather, you don't need to take that freight. You do because you're either afraid to say no or don't know better and if you lose income, well, you just lose income. I realize you need little to no skill doing this, but to keep moving takes a lil brain power, not resignation, "someone has to", no, "someone else has to!" Be the smart one.
    :) If you don't to lose money, I don't either! Merry Xmas!!
