I just bought a Dezl 560 from Garmin over the Christmas week (a gift to myself) which does more than I really need including re-routing in the event of accidents which I seldom do without some local guidance. Generally though, when planning my route (I drive mostly in the NE corridor - Maine to Kentucky) I rely on directions given by drivers to my dispatcher with my own little twist... studying the Google Maps for better ways to the stop.
Keep a Road Atlas handy even if you don't use it and know HOW to use it,... it's surprising how many drivers really don't know how to read a map anymore.
