I'm writing a novel and I want to have my main character hitch a ride with a trucker with a load of logs. (logs because it's a modern fairy tail and it's a different take on the whole wood cutter thing). The story is set around Louisiana. I did read that picking up hitch hikers is not usually done but would a driver stop to pick up a young girl on the side of the road who looked she was running away from a bad situation, very thin, covered in cuts and bruises, dirty torn dress? Also can anyone give me some idea of common routs that logging trucks take around this area. Thanks so much.

Let's just point out log trucks usually do not travel that far . From the cut site to the mill. And run several trips a day.

I don't know that I would pick up a hitch-hiker, per se, but if I passed someone who appeared to be in distress I would definatly stop to see if they needed help. At the very least, I would call the highway patrol or local police.

Most loggers don't waste time with truckstops. Depending where the block is in the bush you'll typically see them travel maybe 3-4 hours max from the landing to the mill. Although there was a time in the past where guys here were loading up in the BC interior and hauling down to the CAN/US border so it is plausible that they'd do longer hauls.

I'd say your character would be much more likely to get picked up by a logging truck on a bushroad vs the highway. Just something about a dark forest and and the lack of civilization that would make it more likely for a trucker to stop and help.
