I am looking in to renting a 24' truck with an auto transport trailer (not the two wheel dolly) and move my household cross country. According to this site http://blog.upack.com/posts/do-rental-trucks-have-to-stop-at-weigh-stations I would have to stop at a few scales in select states if they are open.

Now my question is being a CDL holder, do I have to log this time I am driving? And just out of curiosity, what are the axle limits for a single axle box truck, 24 foot? I know the GVWR is going to be 26,000 incl the trailer but I don't expect to go over gross.

No, for 2 reasons. 1) you are not involved in commerce and 2) it is not a CMV.

When was younger, we rode in the back of a pick up near Des Moines. We had to go over the scales at Van Meter because they even required pickups at that time to cross them. Just because you cross the scale, doesn't mean it's a truck.

Hauling household, you won't get close to axle weights.

Sometimes they have a sign up that says no rental trucks through scale

Some states are only commercial vehicles over a weight, others are all commercial vehicles, and yet others are all over a certain weight. Let us know which states you are going through for better info.

I have no concern about crossing scales really. My question is more about whether to keep a log book or not.

No log, its not for compensation. Only compensated work is to be logged. Your just a regular guy with a moving truck at this point. Just like Joe schmoe and his friends. Dot doesn't require logs on them.

See the govvy, they get a little antsy when they don't know how much money were making. So they require us to log it all for compensation, but billy Bob the cop can handle the use of deadly force 5 days a week and be a bouncer on the weekend. But nobody bats an eye.

No log would be required, your not "working" you are on your own time driving a non-commercial vehicle, but there are some areas that will require you to cross their scales, be safe

Newbie here so I might be wrong but I heard it was all States due to national security or something. I did a similar move four years ago from IL to FL, car hauler and all, and they told me to stop at all weigh stations. But maybe they were just saying all as to not to get into the discussion of which States do what.

    Have a safe move Driver,

Yeah you're not a CMV, however some states will have a sign for rental trucks to enter scale. No log book needed either.

You're fine to go. It's a reason why UHaul Penske etc moving 26 foot and less are mostly not air bag equipped and under weight. Drove them at 18 without a cdl cross states and no issues. Log books are for record keeping of people that drive for a living. Those that make money for a living have a good pie slice for "safety" groups such as DOT.
