I think that Apple felt that the future of computers was in gaming and other home uses. That was probably back in the late 70's or early 80's? IBM took a different view and saw opportunities within the business community. Both found a niche. Other than graphics, I still don't know many people who currently use Apple computers. Nearly everyone that I know uses IBM or one of the many clones that operate with windows. Thanks and you have a good weekend, too.

At one point, in the beginning, Microsoft made more money from having their software in Macs than other platforms but you are kind of correct about IBMs impact on PCs due to when IBM selected the then smaller OS from MS to run their hardware then that gave MS a rather large leg up especially in the business arena as IBM was, at the time HUGE in the business field. So a certain amount of luck impacted the markets simple due to who the big dog at the time selected.

Apple has always been more focused in education and creative venues and for years PC was "business" and Apple was "creative".

As to people using "IBM" I highly doubt anyone still has an "IBM" as they completely bailed on the PC market and left it to the cheap clones awhile back but I am sure their are still some floating around.

And now looking at the Post PC world we have two players in Android and Apple and Windows Mobile has more or less, and unfortunately, missed the boat. I say unfortunately because I would much prefer a few more platforms in the market.

The main reason your comment made me giggle was its rather funny thinking the biggest tech company, or biggest anything company, "missed the boat" ... Guess they just found the next boat, mobile, to be a bit bigger and much more profitable.

    Stay Safe,
    MD

PS not arguing the points but I do enjoy a healthy discussion about stuff.

I think that Apple was much larger than IBM when the pc market was in it's youth. It was when IBM concentrated on the business market that things began to change. Once IBM took off, Steve Jobs was forced out of the company he started. I remember early in the industry that we had several different operating systems. But, it was IBM and Apple that survived. Once the ability to manufacture computer chips was made outside the U.S., that was a game changer and we saw the clones flood the market. Back in the 80's, I paid around $10,000 for an IBM PS2 computer. It isn't even fast enough to get on the internet today. Clones did enable more companies to purchase computers. At one time I had several different pc's, including IBM, Compaq, Sony and others. We used them around the clock in a business that I owned. The performance was good with all of them. Back then, I did look at Apple, but they did not have the business software that I needed, so I went with dos systems.

Just had a flash back of taking a programming class in High School on a Tandy/Radio Shack TRS-80... and writing a few college papers on my Commodore 64... LOL

    Times do change for sure.

I initially studied computer programming. That didn't last too long. Back then we had to write a program, have the key punch cards and then put the cards into the computer. A small computer was about the size of a compact car. lol. I decided pretty quickly that I did not want to spend my days writing programs and staying indoors. I have forgotten most of what I learned. Today, a cell phone has more computing power that that computer that I started on.

I used to crawl into the payroll "computers" in the Philly Navy / Marine payroll center when I was 8yrs old to sweep out the chaff after a run. Back then plastic bags were not as common as they are today. We swept them to doors, dad scooped them into boxes and our Boy Scout troop would add them into the stuff we took for recycling after a Paper Drive.

No one understood when I laughed hysterically about the "chaffgate" deal in Florida a few years back.
