No "overnight" parking... So drivers on the night shift are fine to catch 10 there during the day? Same issue I hit at a Walmart not long ago... Ask politely ask to move... But during the day no problem? (Newbie here so if I am wrong I am ok with that ... lol)

Just pull out onto the highway shoulder, open the hood and put out your triangles...
Sorry officer, I'm broke down and roadside emergency is on the way. You can wait with me if you like....

The ones in SC and some in NC as well have signs that do say 'no overnight parking-2hr limit' posted in several places right in front of the truck parking area

Never been kicked out of one at night though if parked in a marked parking spot.

For what it's worth as well....Va will ticket you in a heartbeat if you're parked on any of the ramps to the rest areas and aren't in a spot.

    brian991219 and ncmickey Thank this.

I am often disappointed by Rest Areas being full on routes not frequently traveled. Planned ahead to stop at some of these Rest stops.

As a newbie, I was wondering how one would know which States one could park on the on/off ramps and which State don't allow it.

Being from IL originally, I would see trucks parked on the on/off ramps and never thought much about it... So it in FL at times too.

I stopped once for a couple hour nap during one trip (in VA I think) and that's when another driver told me to be careful doing that because some States will ticket you.

Until then I didn't think about it being an issue.

The best thing to do is just don't do it. It isn't safe and some states expressly forbid it, some allow it, and some selectively enforce it whenever the mood strikes them to.

If you must, park on the on ramp and not the off ramp. Vehicles entering the on ramp from surface roads will be traveling at a much lower rate of speed than exiting from the roadway. There have been instances where cars exiting the highway have hit trucks on the off ramp with bad results.

Good planning will solve that problem in most cases.

I'm surprised Jersey doesn't have this policy. Ever seen the rest area just past exit 7 on 78 at 2am?

I think in North Carolina the Highway Patrol IS the DOT.

I'll give Oregon props, they have a posted 12 hour parking limit at rest areas.

Canada has jumped to the conclusion that it would be a good idea, overnight parking... just go somewhere else, right?
