    -CB radio goes dead quiet.
-someone calls out on the CB that they just broke loose
-someone calls out on the radio that the road behind them is slick
-No spray coming up from the tires of other vehicles when the roads are shiny
-a light tap of your brakes makes your truck/trailer feel light.

Who cares? It's a relevant topic, given the season and all, and the info he's presented might help someone now.

First of all it is a basic truck driver skill to check both mirrors ever 30 seconds or so. That's how I was taught in 79. Secondly, when your wheels start to break traction, your rpm's will noticeably increase. This is the first red flag signaling that you need to release the accelerator.

You're never too slow but very easily too fast no matter what your speed vs the speed limit. It can happen anytime at any speed.

    1. Slow down. I'm on I90 and I35 daily and it's almost comical all the super truckers that pass me and end up in the median 20 miles down the road during snowstorms.
    2. If your drive wheels have broken loose after letting up on accelerator or slowing and is causing a jacknife you indeed do need to accelerate to bring straight. First-hand knowledge.
    3. If your your trailer wheels are traveling faster than drives but drives have traction and you see that trailer coming around tap the trailer brake. Or so I've been told by some seasoned vets that have driven many years in the north.
    4. Did I mention to slow down? And wave to the frielndly super trucker that passed and is now jacknifed in the ditch.

    Yes.
Swift had special valves put in that would prevent airflow at 2 inches of travel, then suddenly give full pressure at 2.1 inches.

It takes a special touch to use the trolley in a Swift truck, for sure.

    Really?

(am I being sarcastic enough? I don't know. I could try a bit harder...)

The only way your trailer wheels are going to stop rolling or be of any concern on ice is if you hit the brakes and they lock causing your trailer to slide one way or the other. We're talking about drive wheels spinning on ice. If you don't stop the over spinning of your tandems, they will veer one way or the other. If you don't stop this veering and you get past 45deg, your trailer will now push you to the point of no return; A jackknife.
