I will be the first to say that my experience with Don Hummer Trucking may have been unique. I didnt seem to hit it off with my dispatcher there, and they only have 5 dispatchers. I spent about 3 weeks with them, including orientation. Their office is in Oxford, Iowa, with their truck yard a couple miles down the road in Homestead, Iowa.
Everyone is friendly. But the recruiter lied to me about everything.
I was told that I would run a regional dedicated windows account for Menards five days per week with two days at home each week. I asked about having the 2 days off during the week, and they quickly agreed to that saying that few drivers wanted to work weekends.
I have run many Menards loads and Menards is a great shipper to run loads for. But the account was with another shipper who simply shipped occasionally to Menards stores. I was told about this mix-up upon arrival for orientation.
At the end of orientation, I was told that I was not in good enough physical condition for this windows account either. But I would still run regional loads with two days at home each week.
Don Hummer pays a top rate of 40 cents per mile. I have it in my notes that they promised me 37 cents per mile. A big drop from my normal pay, but acceptable with 2 days at home each week. During orientation, I was told that I would be paid 35 cents per mile, and get 36 cents per mile after 90 days.
They had everyone sign a paper stating that they would be be paid 27 cents per mile with the balance being bonus pay.
Don Hummer Trucking only pays drivers every two weeks.
My 1st trip as a regional driver was to Georgia from Iowa, and back. Also went to Pennsylvania and back to Iowa. This was as a Regional Iowa driver....?
Then the dispatcher complained about me getting two days off each week, stating that drivers who had been with the company longer got preference to loads and home time.
I was in the truck for 5 days each week, but generally only driving for 3 of those days, while sitting under a load which could not be delivered early.
Don Hummer Trucking only has 5 dispatchers.
I insisted on my home time and the dispatcher stated that I did not have a future with the company.
I cleaned out my truck but was not sure about quilting when I drove home for my home time. At least not until I got home and saw my paycheck. I always drove to/from the terminal where I always left the truck.
I got home to see that I had only been paid 27 cents per mile for my first two-week paycheck.
I immediately sent them a resignation email.
I got a call the following week asking why I was not running loads that they were sending to the truck, which was parked in their yard...
(All dispatchers and office personal are withing a few steps of each other.)
Received a total of 3 paychecks. Even though I only spent 3 weeks with them, I got 3 paychecks due to the delay in pay for loads. One showed loads at 35 cents per mile. The 1st and last paycheck showed loads at 27 cents per mile.
My experience with them showed them to be a company to stay away from.
I found it odd that at the time when I cleaned out my truck, that I had driven 2,000 miles more then another driver who was there and had also been in my orientation class. And I had been sitting for about 2 days in each 5 day period.
Historically I normally used about 60 on-duty hours in 5 days. With this company, I used about 30-35 on-duty hours in 5 days.
I look at a company this way. If the recruiter has to lie to drivers to get them on-board with the company, then the driver's experience with that company is never going to get better.
This company has about 150 trucks, but is planning on expanding to about 200 trucks the 1st of next year. They mainly pull reefers and dry vans.Last edited: Nov 13, 2014

I worked safety and compliance there and I can tell you that if you are even the smallest bit concerned about being found out, don't apply.
