Many dash cams and most action cams use a standard tripod thread mount. 1/4x20". I try to stick to those since there are so many aftermarket mounts available, and you are not confined to using a proprietary mount, (You can't replace easily, and sure as heck can't find out on the road.)
If you look on amazon or ebay there are hundreds of different mounts that use the standard tripod thread.
Sitting on top of your dash isn't the ideal place for a dash cam, unless you mostly want to see the top of your hood.
At the top center of the windshield where the wipers will keep the glass somewhat clean is the best place.

Another driver has a Go-pro on a tripod on top of his dash and he says it works great. I just find the Go-pro too big and I think it catches too much attention from outside..
You are right... a short tripod will not work... Will look for some online.
My company has rules about where to place camera... nothing in the path of the windshield wiper... Gotta be at top center, on the passenger side... I cook in the truck and sometimes the windshield gets wet inside... -
I think this is the one I will eventually try.Rocks Thanks this. -

Just watched some Youtube videos comparing this camera with GoPro Hero silver. The image quality of GoPro Session is not that good... Battery life is good for maximum 2 hr recording... I wonder if camera can remain plugged to USB port 24/7. Couldn't find yet if microphone can be turned off... Don't want to record me singing....
Still deciding if I want the LCD screen or not... Decisions....decisions...

And one would kind of assume that a camera that is half the size and half the cost would have had a few corners cut.
But if, like mentioned above, one thinks the regular GoPros are too big to have on the dash and wants to save a couple hundred bucks, it might be worth looking at.
But yes, I too would love to have it all.Rocks Thanks this. -
Trying to put all the pros and cons on a scale and pick the one that offers more advantages according to what I want.
There are lots and lots of Youtube videos doing comparisons, reviews and tutorials about these cameras.
Here are some... Some videos were made abroad some time ago and the price of the camera is outdated.

This is the g1w for $58.49 including shipping from Houston. I did replace the 8gb card with a 32gb card which give 107 3 minute segments for a total of 5 hours and 21 minutes. It has a G sensor which is supposed to save segments when the G sensor is set off however it does not always work.

I have had a Hero 3 for two years, and it is now on life support. I can make it work but it's not fun. I think the heat is taking a toll on it. It can get pretty hot in the windshield. Lately I keep it right above the defrost vent with it set on cold a/c and that keeps it cool. Maybe it's just getting old too. All I know is I'm searching for another dashcam. GoPro has been good quality. I've had to use footage several times for several different incidents, both day and night, and have had good luck. Just not sure if I want another GoPro or want to try something different.
Moon_beam Thanks this.
