My dad and I have used 1-5/16" sockets on wheel nuts for years with no issues. Believe it or not my little 1/2" drive Mac impact takes 95% of truck wheels off without issue. What's your reasoning for needing an extra deep impact socket? I've never had an issue using a regular deep socket on wheels.

Just a what if... being that they make extra deep ones, and the wheel manufacturer says depending on nut height (whatever that means), stud length increases, and I saw lots of variation in thread protrusion too (like I said in there somewhere).

Or not, actually I just double checked by threading a wheel bolt that I picked up for torque testing into a wheel nut, and I got 1-3/4 inches protruding before the deep socket bottomed out, since it has some extra round space beyond the hex area inside as it crosses over into the square drive end (given that the bolt is 22mm diameter, the extra space tapers from the hex part so it couldn't be too much bigger to fit all the way down there). So in that case threads extending more than 1-3/4 inches past the nut would require an extra deep socket, or less so for larger diameter bolts. The extended depth socket I was referring to only allows for a 22mm bolt diameter throughout as well, just longer for that aspect.Last edited: Mar 4, 2016
