Are Freight Rates Getting Ready to Rise?
Posted on 24 Feb, 2016 By Matt Sullivan
We finally saw some signs of spring last week. Rates leveled off for vans and flatbeds, and demand was up for both. That means spot market rates might be on the rise soon. Maybe as soon as next week. Fingers crossed.
For vans, three markets saw significantly higher rates, including Dallas and Stockton, CA. The states of California and Texas are huge in setting spot market trends. Rates also rose on high-volume lanes out of Los Angeles and Memphis, which is another good sign.
All rates include fuel surcharges, and are based on real transactions between carriers and brokers.
SOUTH CENTRAL
WEST
- Average outbound rate in Dallas rose 4¢
- Houston rates dropped 2¢ overall, but demand is up, and rates should rebound soon. Rates rose last week on the lanes from Houston to Laredo and to Oklahoma City
NORTHEAST
- Los Angeles outbound rates added 3¢ per mile
- Stockton rates rose on most major lanes. The lane from Stockton to Seattle gained 20¢ to an average of $2.00/mile over the weekend, but dropped back to $1.86 early this week.
Rates in the Northeast region were mostly down last week after rising the week before.
The headhaul lane from Buffalo to Philly lost 13¢, and the backhaul rate fell 34¢, so the roundtrip is way down. It still pays an average of $2.13/mile for 730 miles, so if you can make it work -- or do two of those in the same week -- you’ll do OK.
- Buffalo fell 4¢
- Philadelphia dropped 1¢
SOUTHEAST
MIDWEST
- Charlotte rates dropped 2¢ to $1.64/mile
- Atlanta slipped to $1.59/mile.
Chicago has suffered from low demand for weeks and has one of the worst load-to-truck ratios in the country.
- Chicago outbound rates dropped to an average of $1.78/mile
- Columbus rates were mixed, some up and some down, so the average held steady at $1.74/mile

Your friend doesn't sound like a wise business man investing 20k each unit, all you would need to modernize a unit is 6k at minimum. I have friends who do the same at power plants and oil refineries it's not about servicing several muiltimillion dollar mortgages it's about being a smart business man and setting up your investments wisely to where they pay themselves off. -

Gotta pad their personal bank accounts someway.T_TRUCKER., 48Packard, PoleCrusher and 1 other person Thank this. -
lmao!
Yeah... it's sad.
Even more sad for my shoes.
Heres a fun fact....
I asked within Indy OC how come this yard is in good shape and the rest are crap.
Was told it was city code that the yard had to be paved so basically Schneider was forced not to have another muddy pothole/quicksand yard lol.PoleCrusher Thanks this. -
Look at the slc yard. How long have they been there and it's still dirt? The majority of Gary is dirt. Portland is dirt. Phoenix is dirt. Fontana was half dirt. El monte is dirt. Most of the drop yards are dirt.
I though the Knights were penny pinchers, but SNI brings it to another level
