"Be Prepared" That Boy scout in us all really keeps packing light hard. But it is a short period and the more stuff you have the tighter life gets. Tripping on stuff you really don't need stinks. Especially when it is someone else's.

Let me explain. Every load that is dispatched is generated by the computer. The same program calculates the miles from point a to point b. For instance, Richmond Va To Colton Ca the program says 2566, it's actually 2581. Now you might say you are being shorted 25 miles. In essence you are, but if you average out your loads over say a year, or even 6 months, you will be paid with in 10 miles of the dispatched load. Example, my load out to Colorado this past week paid me 1801 miles, I actually drove 1814. My reload is 2040 paid miles, I'm actually driving 2017.

We have a painted mark on the track for the fifth wheel. It's 2 notches from the front. I keep mine one notch behind it.

I'd say we run light 60% of the time. This particular round was 7600lbs out and 44k back.

--what's the differential normally? I'd hate to think I'm driving *any* amount (I've heard upwards of 10%) for free...

*EDIT - looks like Johnboy answered a couple of posts up.. THANKS!!

Are you doing this to run/get ahead or are they actually dispatching you assuming these numbers? Keep in mind I was *just* taught to assume 50 mph and you're bumping right up against your 68 governor...

Yes, JohnBoy responded above but it's also in how you choose to look at it too...

Being paid "by the mile" is how it's calculated but if you think of it "by the trip" and not "by the mile" then you stop worrying about "driving for free"... Or "sitting not working" ... Not saying one should trust blindly or not verify that they are getting paid correctly.

The amount we get paid is, yes, based on how far apart a and b are but that also assumes a certain amount of non drive work too... And what if I select a slightly different route than the computer did... It's just a package deal... And pays a bit better the further the two points are away from each other.

The way I prefer to think of it is they pay me an obscene amount of money to hook a king pin, bump a dock, and complete some paperwork... And they let me use their truck for free to see this great and beautiful country of ours. ;-)

    Win/Win... :)

Just a personal goal... I basically had a 3.5 day drive out here with close to 4 days to get there.

I lost a bit of time my first half day rolling so I need to keep the door closed to arrive on time.

But no one dispatched me based on a 700 mile drive session. Just bragging rights... lol :)
