Hope no ones thinking I'm saying "take a short cut", cause that's not it at all, I've just been lucky to have a family member teach me, in my opinion, better than any company sponsored schooling, he was very demanding of my driving, no short cuts

Which schools are these? I'm currently looking to get my CDL and would love to get paid for it.

You looking for a trucking company school?
Which city/state do you live in?
Your age; are you over 21/22/23?

Old Dominion , has there own schools . Not full time , so they open classes as needed. At the larger terminals. Greensboro just had two classes .

This is true... Wonder if they will ever figure out that the only things you need to get a class A CDL is the following.

    1. A functioning brain
    2. A willingness to read and study the free manual
    3. Access to a qualified truck

You have those things and you can get your CDL tomorrow afternoon if you can do everything it says in that manual.

But, realistically your going to need some practice time. And it will be much harder to get a good job without a 160 hour school, mostly due to insurance reasons. Well worth $1800 to me

Actually there are guys that do just what Dominik said.. They rent themselves and the truck to you for the day for around $500 and guarantee you pass. I work at the highway department and we have two guys who have done it. That's in Missouri. They went in and passed the written and got their permit, then they paid the guy to drill them on the inspection and test drive including the cone backing.. Guy drilled it into them for several hours and then they went and took the test.. He keeps drilling until you pass, even if it takes a couple days. $450 in this case but $450 compared to THOUSANDS and weeks of wasted time just to get the same thing.. One of the guys took the tanker and double triple endorsement written along with his standard written and now has a class A with those endorsements and has never even talked to a school.. I'm just sayin' there really is more than one way to skin this cat.

Tell that to the insurance companies and potential employers. School opens a lot more doors

Well, you can of course get a local job pretty easy this way, in fact I would recommend it so you can get the practice that you mention but.... Any of these same mega companies that are charging thousands in tuition are still going to hire you, still going to train you with another driver, instead of calling it student training they will call it refresher training.. The difference is that you do not owe them for getting the CDL. They need CDL holders to keep their seats warm.. They aren't going to turn you down because a CDL is a CDL however it is obtained.

True, but I recommend avoiding the megas if at all possible. For me, I wanted local, and everyone wanted either experiance or a 160 hr school. It was worth it to me, to get that good local job right away
