If you're passionate about driving truck, by all means, drive truck and pursue your goal to become independant. Keep in mind however that 'big bucks' can be elusive in this business but definitely possible.

How do you raise capital to start a trucking company? Baby steps. You get a company gig and save every penny you can to buy your first used truck. Assuming you're profitable and can run a business, you buy a second truck and hire your first driver. And so on and so on.

Trucking is NOT get rich quick. It's hard work and a ton of hours. And as you add trucks, it only gets harder w/ longer hours. If you think it's automatic that you'll buy a truck and mindlessly pull freight and cash enormous checks, you don't know what you don't know. Trucking isn't nearly as glamorous or romantic as you think it is.

    God, you're 16....

It's good that you are thinking about your future career choices at a young age. But here's my thinking.

If you are smart enough to become a surgeon or doctor, do that first and foremost. Pretty well anyone can learn how to drive a truck. If you place all your chips on trucking right out of the gate it will be the only skill you have where you can make decent money (maybe even good money as an owner operator then eventually company owner), but if you have an accident, even not your fault, you may have a hard time finding employment. Now what are your options? Drive for Carolina cargo team split 0.20 per mile? And hope you don't have another mishap making you completely unhirable?

Use your brain power to your maximum advantage first and foremost. You will make more money and live longer. You can always start trucking later in life and with a much fatter salary as a doctor you will have the seed money to maybe do what you want. I think you need to decide if you are in search of making a lot of money or working a job you really love. For me I liked trucking the first 5 years or so over the road. Now it is mostly a monotonous boring job. I only work about 4 days a week on average, which is a lot less than most drivers. I wish I could be home more than that. I don't have any other skills where I can maintain my salary though. (I'm an independent one truck company). So I'm kinda stuck. See?
